Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira Gets New Anime Project & 4K Remaster of 1988 Anime Film

Sunrise teases new anime will adapt entire manga story

Quote:
Manga creator and anime director Katsuhiro Otomo announced at his Anime Expo panel on Thursday that a new anime project of his Akira manga is in the works. Sunrise president and CEO Makoto Asanuma apologized for the short teaser presented at the panel, and while the staff is still developing the project, Asanuma said that they want to incorporate the entirety of the manga's story.

The earlier 1988 anime film will also receive a 4K remaster next spring in Japan. The 4K remaster will also receive a release in the United States.

Otomo's original science-fiction action manga is set in Neo-Tokyo, a city rebuilt after being destroyed in a mysterious explosion. The manga ran in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 1982 to 1990. Otomo directed his own animated film adaptation that premiered on July 16, 1988 — the same day that the story has the fictional Tokyo being destroyed.

Doesn’t that just mean a theatrical release?

Wow. A 4K remaster of Akira sounds awesome. I’ll quintuple dip for sure.

And the new adaptation sounds awesome. I’d love to see a faithful adaptation of the manga. I wonder if they are planning a television series or theatrical movies. I’ll take both.

Hmm could be. I'll move this to the wishlist then. Since there isn't hard conformation on if it'll get disc.

I’m down as long as TMS doesn't DNR it to death like their previous UHDs...

Default Akira 4K UHD Remastered (Japan)

Otomo’s anime masterpiece Akira will arrive on 4K UHD in Japan on April 24th, 2020.

No word yet on English subtitles but Anime News Network is reporting that a US release is also expected.

Will be great to see this classic anime film receive the 4K treatment next year!

Awesome news there!
A new Dolby Atmos or a DTS:X remix would be a very welcome addition to this. The reason I said that is because the 5.1 Dolby TrueHD remix track on the Blu-ray was incredible, it truly blew me away. Too bad I don't have the Blu-ray no more sadly.

Original Dolby Stereo mix or bust.

It has subtitles and a dub. 100GB disc.

Audio is as listed:
Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (192kHz, 24-bit) aka Hypersonic mix
Dolby Digital 5.1 aka 2001 remix
LPCM Dolby Surround aka original 1988 mix

So it has all 3 mixes.

My source is the official Japanese website.

I've never been the biggest fan, but I just might upgrade my current Blu-ray with this when it comes out providing it looks good ofcourse. I've never seen any anime on UHD actually.

I wonder what the odds are of titles like Fist Of The North Star (1986 movie), Vampire Hunter D or Wicked City being released on UHD sometime in the future...

Sweet. Now this is will become my biggest priority for me to buy for my collection as soon as it comes out. Glad to know too that the signature "Hypersonic" 192KHz audio track will still be included fully-specced this time, I mean, full-blown 24-bit, without the nerfing to 16-bit Funimation decided to do. Regardless of some people asking about how much of a difference it actually makes, it's still a good-to-have. I wish they could pair it with properly translated English subtitles from the Japanese script this time instead of the inaccurate Pioneer dubtitles like in the original Bandai Visual BD, but from the looks of it and the specs provided by the webpage, it may probably still be the latter case here. Hopefully not, though.

Wouldn't be surprised if it actually ends up looking like those YouTube caps...

Yeah. The least compressed shot, the Tokyo Olympics signboard, has that dnr'd Bandai 4K remaster look.

In case anyone was wondering, they scanned an interpositive yet again.

Is it that hard to keep the details in 4K I wonder since most animation these days uses damaging dnr?

It's a brand new scan so in my head without tampering we would get at least same details maybe even more. But seems we get a little more information on all sides so that's something for now

F*** yeah I’m importing. US release (if it ever happens) will most likely suck in comparison.

Amazon links don’t work (maybe the Blu-raydotcom ref kills it) but I ordered through search. For some reason the Amazon exclusive doesn’t ship to the US but at least I got a preorder in on the standard 4K.

Please no more DNR. GITS just about got away with it but Innocence is tragically bad.
