United Kingdom The Vanishing (1988) 8th June

Quote:
This original brilliant and disturbing George Sluizier's masterpiece is regarded as one of the best suspense thrillers ever made. Based on the novel 'The Golend Egg' by Tim Krabbe, The Vanishing is the ultimate tribute to Alfred Hitchcock with the ending to prove it. Whilst touring in France, a young couple (Rex and Saskia) stop for a break at a roadside service station. Saskia leaves Rex to browse around the shops and vanishes leaving no clues as to her whereabouts. Three years later Rex begins to receive taunting postcards from Saskia's supposed abductor and is drawn into a terrifying battle of cat and mouse in his desperate quest to discover the fate of his missing lover.

This is likely to be a port of the recently released StudioCanal German BD:

German back cover

[Show spoiler]

It also might be like the StudioCanal German Hammer Blu-rays, where the German support is simply stripped out of the UK disc.

Just watched this on the criterion channel - very harrowing, filled with dread, unease and hits the viewer where it hurts. The score is great, lovely visuals and very atmospheric - I’ll definitely be buying the blu-ray.

Forgot to mention, the StudioCanal German Blu-ray is compared to the US Criterion here:

I like the main theme music in this film. Lovely bassline.

Reminds me of Michael Jackson's Give In To Me.

If anyone else in the USA wants this, the shipping restriction on it has finally been removed:

The artist was the bassplayer and one of the two singers from the most popular band ever in the Netherlands, Doe Maar. He has done a whole list of movie scores.

Even the Criterion is slim as far as extras are concerned.

You’d think such a fascinating film would have a plethora of extras.

Was pretty surprised myself when I checked Criterion. As you say the warrants all manner of analysis.

With Sluizer and Donnadieu dead and the film somewhat forgotten in the wake of the remake's terrible reception that pretty much derailed Sluizer's career (though Crimetime was pretty much the final nail in his reputation's coffin), there probably wasn't that much they could have done. They could at least have included the low key original trailer or the wildly overwrought French one focussing on Donnadieu to make it look like a French film but which gives away too much though.

Personally my favourite extras are analytical pieces by critics and students of film rather than reflection of those involved. They could always do something like that.
