The symptoms you describe sound exactly like the 360 not the PS3. I also have a Launch Day 60 Gig and have none of those problems, my 360 on the other hand had every one of those symptoms...6 times over...so I don't have a 360 anymore
![]() My PS3 is a Tank and it's a hellova good investment not only for games but of course for the Blu |

I own all three, 40 gig, 60 gig, and 80 gig.
None of them die out on me. They all got hot in a couple hour, but of course that's normal for electronic stuff. But atleast they didn't overheat. 60 gig - PS2 backward capability. 80 gig - 80% or so PS2 backward capability. 40 gig - None. Sony stop 60 gig because they shift to 80 gig, and now rumors has it that they're stopping 80 gig because they're shifting to 120 gig or so. Buy whichever you want, hard drive can be upgrade any time anyways. The PS3 fan make little to no noise at all, really, it's actually quiet. Even after it's been turn on for a long time. Loud-fan noise PS3 theory - Out the window. Last edited by Blu-Generation; 01-31-2008 at 10:26 PM. |

I have had a 60 gb for a year now,and It's amazing. hasn't overheated and the fan noise is not very noticeable. much quiter than an xbox. and if you .. like me.. play your movies or games slightly loud it's not even an issue to consider worrying about.

The information you got is incorrect. No overheating and NO fan noise. PS3 never has any issue with overheating. Xbox (and xbox360) are notoriously prone to overheating. That is a fact. Please do purchase a new PS3. It will be a great addition to your entertainment area. Few of the things you will know is: 1. It is VERY quiet 2. Sits elegantly as if it is the KING of the house. 3. It performs anything you throw at it wonderfully (games/movies) As for different types of PS3. 20gb - avoid it 40gb - NO Ps2 or PS1 backward compatibility 60gb - best choice, it comes with PS2 EmotionEngine chip and ps1/ps2 compatible 80gb - Software based ps1/ps2 compatible, no more EE chip in it then there are 120gb 160gb PS3 coming soon to retailers near you. I don't know what features added or reduced on these. Have fun shopping. Sorry if I confuse you. But I hope that the information helps with choosing one that's best for you. Cheers |

I bought a 60gb on its release date. I've had no problems with it. It is rarely-never ever noisy. There are certain situations where it is... like when its been on for 12+ hrs. I've never heard of any other problems... till about.. 2 months ago. Coworkers bought a 40gb and it couldn't read the Hard drive. I checked it out, researched online, and it seems like its a trend that the 40gb's are having. Get a 60gb or 80gb. Overheating will happen... but not often... and it'll happen if you leave your PS3 on for an insane amount of time. This is such a fanboy thing to say... I ADMIRE THE WII'S NEW INNOVATION SCHEME... I ADMIRE GEARS OF WARS AND BIOSHOCK ON THE 360... BUT MY PS3 IS THE F*CKING SHIZZZNITS... OUTPOWERS AND OUTPLAYS ALL OTHER CONSOLES OUT. NUFF SAID! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

My guess with a name like "uptheowls" is that you are from Sheffield?
If this is the case the 60gb we had over here in the UK isn't 100% PS2 compatible but pretty close. At least every game I have tried has worked. As for fan noise and overheating, well it get's warm as you would expect but provided it is in a well ventilated area you shouldn't have any fan noise. Overheating as far as I am aware is something the PS3 very definitely does not suffer from. |

Well sorry to disagree with some of you but my PS3 (60GB) does make a fan noise (especially when upconverting a DVD or when folding home). However, the fan noise is not too loud but sometimes bother me in movies when a scene is silent/no background music (but it nerver overheated). I have a friend that also has a 60GB and no fan noise.
If you use the PS3 for movie and/or PS3 games, I would recomend de 40GB because it will run cooler (the chip is smaller, consume less enrgy and less heat). If want to play PS2 games, than go either with a used 60GB or the 80 GB or wait for the new one that will be coming .. someday... |

The fan is mostly quiet and for my part it only starts at full speed speed when it upconverts dvds (it's noticeable for me when I watch a movie in my bedroom at night at very low volume while my gf is sleeping). Besides that, I've never heard it in my living room! By the way, it's been one year and my 60 gb ps3 works as great as the day I bought it ![]() My brother recently bought an HDTV (nov 2007) and he got a 60 gb model that was still sitting on the shelves (after I brought my ps3 twice to his house)... My father is planning to upgrade to an HDTV this fall and also plans to get a ps3. Long live to the ps3!!! (by the way I don't play games very often, I consider my ps3 as a blu-ray player with the capability to play games and to be used as a media center) The only thing that could be better is the internet browser.... |

What's with this "thinking" nonsense?! Just buy it already!
![]() But seriously I have a 60 gig since Jun 07 and yeah it does have a noticeable fan during quiet scenes of a movie and if you focus on it. But since they no longer sell the 60 gig you really shouldn't care because all I've heard of the 80 gig and 40 gig especially is that they are whisper quiet. I also run it all the time with it hasn't overheated. The question you have to ask yourself is this: should I pay $400 and buy something that can load blu-rays quickly, surf the internet, play music, view photos, watch videos, play video games and cure cancer (I am not kidding http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3)? Or should I pay more for something that does DTS-HD MA (but none of the other things I said)? |

I have a 40GB and an 80GB. You should know there is one more difference that no one has yet mentioned. the 40GB doesn't have a mem card reader, and has two less usb ports. No big deal as you can buy an attachment, but I myself prefer to have the least amount of clutter possible. And the 80GB does have a very low amount of fan noise, I EMPHASIZE VERY LOW. The 40GB that I have has absolutely none whatsoever. If I mute the t.v. I can't even tell it's turned on.
So what are you waiting around for? GO GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The PS3 is hands down the best electronic purchase I've ever made. Get it, you won't regret it. It's an awesome gaming system as well as a great Blu-ray player (except for the lack of DTS-MA which doesn't affect me anyway). And I know from experience that it's a heck of a lot quieter than the 360, even the slightly louder 60 gig. I don't notice it at all, unless the volume is very low and I'm concentrating on it.

only people with no PS3 talk about the PS3 overheating... I have a PS3 and it hasn't had any heating problems whatsoever... of course, it all depends on where you put your PS3... if you put the PS3 inside a glass or wooden cabinet with shag carpet flooring, of course it will heat up, just like any other electronic equipment. Even so, my PS3 performed better heat-wise than my 360. I kept both of them on the top of a small table, with about a foot of open area to the closest anything... one time, my cousins borrowed my 360, they just left it on the carpet while playing, in less than a week it died. I thought I was gonna get mad, but it's only the 360... I didn't even bother getting it replaced.

The ancient early-adopter models could sound like a hair-dryer when playing BD, but they've improved the fan systems since then--
Got one of the newer models (just before they closed out the 60G), stood it upright with plenty of ventilation, and now I panic if I can hear it in the room at all, never mind over the refrigerator sound in the kitchen. ![]() |

Don't worry about these things, most of the issues with the PS3 are VERY isolated, it has a VERY LOW failure rate. I have the 60GB model, and as long as you keep it well ventilated, at least a foot on each side and on top, you shouldn't have issues with overheating. So stop thinking and go out and buy yourself a PS3!
