Default Changes in your collecting decisions

I wasn't sure where it was best to post this so feel free to move this elsewhere if necessary

I'm in the process of moving my steelbooks from bags to slipcovers and I was wondering how many titles I've got both a steelbook and standard release for. Usually I will just buy the steelbook (unless there is a regular version with an extra disc or a collector's set I want)

There are times though where I've bought the regular release and some time down the line, it has a steelbook release so I end up with two copies. I hadn't really thought about it until then, but I've done a rough tally and it comes to about 100 or so titles (and a couple of boxsets), but it could be more

While I'm not necessarily running out of space (apart from for boxsets), it does seem stupid to take up shelf space with duplicates, and there are certain sections where I could do with more space. It's amazing how many Fox titles I have two of. I do have titles where I have different steelbook versions, but I collect steelbooks and I don't mind

I also have titles like the original Transformers where I have a two disc release, and no steelbook contains that extra disc, or titles where I have bought the Warner Archive release and then it's been released as an HMV Premium Collection title. For that I'll keep both. I'd never buy the WA release if I already had the HMV one

The reasons I liked having them was because they looked good on the shelf, because they boosted the collection numbers and because I thought why sell them if I will only get about 20% back of what I paid for them

The first two aren't necessarily that important, and it does make sense to get some money back for unneeded titles. I have criteria for what I keep when I upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray, and would still stick to this. Also, I'd always make sure I have a Blu-ray copy if I also have a 4K only release, but if the 4K contains the Blu-ray, then I don't need the individual Blu-ray release if I have it

There are plenty of other details I could go into regarding slipcover releases or the different artwork, but I was just wondering if anybody else had come to a similar realisation or another one

On a final note, I'll still always pick up that cheap Nicolas Cage movie, that's space I'm willing to use

The realization I've come to reading this is that although I have a (relatively small) collection, I'm really not much of a collector.

What matter isn't how big it is, but whether or not it does justice to your love of film.
Collecting shouldn't ever be an end in itself.

The main changes in my collecting habits over the past year or two are:

1. Steelbooks/Slipcovers - totally over these. There are exceptions to both, but generally whilst all things being equal steels/slips look much nicer than generic casing, to me it's just not worth the additional cost and space. As such I've largely stopped going out of my way for steelbooks. Slips, if they come with one, great, if not, great. 99% of the time slips get binned now. I'd rather have the uniformity on the shelf.

2. Blind buys - I've reined this in significantly. Anime in particular used to be a huge money drain, now I have that much in my collection that I've still not gotten around to watching that I've figured that I'll just make my way through that before I start adding to it. There will be exceptions and classic anime coming to blu ray will always be a consideration, but new stuff, not so much. I'm also a lot less willing to gamble on foreign-language films. This is no sleight on foreign cinema as I firmly believe that it's as good as, and often better than English-language cinema, however I'll often watch films while doing other things, and whilst I'm not anti-subtitles, I have to watch to the extent that I can't really do anything else. That being said, silents will always be of interest, as will Weimar-era German expressionist works of Lang, Murnau, Pabst etc. Although I do have the Wong Kar-wai set on pre-order as well as The Eight Hundred, so again, always exceptions....

3. Multi-dipping - I'm a lot less inclined to do this as I used to be. Premium Collection is an obvious one. I'd double dip, day one, on things that I'd already got from WAC. Now, I'll do it sometimes in a sale when PC run them, and if I do then I'll always find a way of dispensing with the WAC as well, no point keeping both.

4. 4K discs - I decided a while ago that 4K would be where I drew the line in terms of always being willing to upgrade titles that I had. For example, I have something on DVD and it comes out on blu, I want it. The jump from blu to 4K is less clear cut for me as there are a good number of titles where I'm perfectly happy to just stick with the regular blu ray. Again, there are exceptions - namely if the movie is a personal favourite, if I don't already have the movie on blu, or if the 4K is a marked improvement over the blu ray, but other than that I'm not as invested in 4K as I was in blu, or even DVD, before it.

I love the curating of a collection but with lockdown I've grown to fall in love with the movies and not the medium. I have bought exactly 3 blu rays this year, It couldn't happen here, Masque of the Red Death and tales from the crypt/vault of horror double bill. Previously I might've bought 10 discs a month. I am jaded with upgrading but I have fun cobbling discs together to minimise space. I have thousands of discs and zero interesting in wasting time and effort reselling so the only way to recoup the value is to watch and enjoy them. One thing I've noticed for certain is that with few exceptions, even an old DVD is perfectly fine so I am not interested anymore in upgrading titles I have. Any time I have done, I've found little value in it. Every time a new title of a favourite movie is released with some new extras I crave getting it and up to now that's what I've done. However, I recognise it's just completism because the extras are usually watched once if at a all or are so sanitised by studio lawyers, they're next to useless from an educational standpoint. I think a lot of the critical commentaries favoured now were borne of necessity because cast and crew commentaries became so mundane and lacked insight. The thing is though, I rarely have the time to rewatch something with commentary so I realise I am trying to be a completist for no reason. The only releases I actively pursue are those by Arrow or the 88-Films Asian ones or anything by Third Window. I'm not stopping buying stuff but sometimes my nostalgia gets in the way of sensibility. I'd see a new issue of an old favourite with new extras so now I watch the DVD, invariably finding it to look just fine. While enjoying the movie immensely I may still be indifferent about the existing extras because they're not what holds the main attraction anyhow. With my appetite for the movie sated by a fresh rewatch, it's easy then to pass up the new release. Lately I watched Heat on DVD, enjoyed it more than ever but when I considered upgrading to blu, I discovered it'd been messed with so problem solved. Then I watched Freaks from DVD, again finding picture and sound to be more than adequate. Turned out there didn't seem to be a HD version out?

Now I'm just getting things I don't have but am sure I'd like. Possessor is on order and The Assassin (Hsiao-Hsien-Hou) too, neither of which I've seen but would consider essential additions to my collection. Comfort of Strangers is on the way too but I only had a bare bones disc and the educational value of the bfs extras coupled with the sensible price of £6.99 makes it an easy purchase.

Well, over the last few months I haven’t bought anything in store in HMV or charity shops. Not quite sure why that is.

Honestly with lockdown my collecting has become much more addictive, because I have more time by myself inside so more time to fall prey to my vices and obsess over things. I worry a lot about expiring licenses and missing out on good deals. I’ve done a few bulk European imports and Vinegar Syndrome imports (oh yeah I get porn now that’s a change), but maybe I should stop and take stock. I can’t resist an Indicator 3 for £30 even if I don’t watch them for months because well when else am I going to buy them?

I picked away at some of my artificial barriers, like saying I’m not allowed to get another title from a label or director, because I haven’t watched the last one of theirs I bought - which only meant I missed out on good deals and OOP/LE titles. I’ve also navigated away from getting a release only for extras, of course if I don’t own it and haven’t seen it for many years or there’s a new restoration that’s different. But if I saw it in DCP in the cinema in the last few years, I don’t get the same satisfaction when I might not even be intending to rewatch the film when I buy it, when I could be spending that time watching new films than obsessing over extras.

4K has been a big change but I feel like the excitement might wear off at some point. It’s nice taking advantage of £10 new and sealed discs on eBay, or 2 for £20 offers, but at the end of the day it’s still a small market with a handful of releases a month, even smaller when I’m putting rebuying what I already have on Blu-ray at the bottom of the pile and sometimes the Blu-ray release is more attractive to me. There’s a good slate of titles lined up for this year, but they’ll be spaced out. And I think I would like to still tackle some of my unwatched Blu-rays.

I’ve been focussing in on directors for the last few years and then buying the next one when the last one is done. But for some I’m at the end of the line and will either have to rebuy in a different edition, or just move on. But that sort of focus is definitely helpful.

One change I really should institute is selling stuff.

I’m at two bookcases, a wall of shelves and boxes and it’s a lot and only going to grow.

I’ve expanded my eBay saved searches and am now on better groups on Facebook Marketplace so find it easier to get stuff. Last summer I updated my wishlist and worked out best prices.

I've tried to cut down in blind buys. I've only got a couple of shelves left for Blu-Rays, so unless it's something I know I'm probably going to love or it's dirt cheap (i.e the occasional Poundland purchase), I'll just rent it or watch it on streaming before buying.

I'm not a massive collector, probably around 1200 Blu/4K/DVD'S but i've decided at 56 years of age and a constant stream of new stuff to watch i need to start whittling down my collection, there's titles i own i haven't watched in years, which tells me i don't really need them. Plus space is a big issue.

I’ve decided not to spend a penny on my collection from my wages this year to focus on upgrading the house. I’ve kind of cheated by prebuying via PayPal everything of interest in Dec preorder wise up to the end of March. But from now on it’s sell the one watchers which are gathering dust to raise funds to buy. So will be waiting for sales for Criterion’s and HMV Premium collections, and 4ks can wait until 3 for £30. So it’s just the Arrows, some 88s and Indicators really. A £100 amazon gift voucher from work as a thank you is on standby if anything super appealing appears which can’t wait. Keeps the dud blind buying to a minimum and it’s my bday in September so can get a couple of gifts in then if I fall too far behind over the summer. I’ve finally creeped over 1000 titles, would take 8-9 years to rewatch them all at my current rate of watching films.

No major changes in the act of collecting beyond adding 4K to my list of formats. Last year I slightly cut down on my annual purchases and I'm aspiring to do the same this year (though I have moved forward one of my bi-annual big US orders via a reshipper a couple of months which will tilt the seasonal average). There's a bit more of a focus on Fox titles for obvious reasons and a varies from month to month attempt to limit my spending as much as possible to what I make on ebay each month. As usual a majority of my purchases are considered blind buys since even before lockdown few foreign or indie films ever ventured anywhere near any of the local muliplexes, with the cheap wild impulse buys way down now that I don't have access to Poundland (I'm in a high risk group so I only get to a branch on the extremely rare occasions I venture out for doctor's appointments or jabs).

The one thing that has changed is attitude and the increasing questioning whether this is becoming an addiction.

That's partially born of storage space issues (aggravated by one of my sister's crap still filling the spare room from her many self-invited stays I've been spared for the past year) but more of lockdown issues - because I rarely get out of the house now my active interests have narrowed and with no work, no ability to go to the gym, (and boy do I need it: it's always been more essential physiotherapy than exercise), no trips (even just shopping or to buy a Private Eye now I'm a subscriber), no house hunting, no meeting with friends or family (none of whom are local, some not even in the same country) the films and TV shows seem to loom as a larger part of daily life even though - as so often happens when there's more free time to watch and you constantly put stuff off - I'm probably watching less in lockdown than I did before.

So it's less a change in then actual act of collecting and more a change in how I perceive it brought on by the apathy and deferral that comes with lockdown (and because of a knee injury that's since healed, I was more or less in self-imposed lockdown since last February).

I decided a while ago to make some minor changes to my collecting.

I've added a small number of 4K UHD purchases but I'm going to try and avoid 'upgrading' where I already have a blu ray of said title. So I'll not be tempted by Arrow and Studio Canal squeezing money out of me for things I've bought relatively recently. With possibly one or two exceptions.

I have an increasing number of redundant DVDs which I cannot take locally to sell because of them being Region 1 and I'm hoping to free up space with the ones I can sell , knowing I won't get much of a return.

I'm keeping from upgrading some DVDs where the Blu Ray isn't a leap or is an 'upscale' (I'm looking at you BBC).

I'm sticking to a strict order of preference with Pre-Orders espcially where Ltd Editions are concerned.

I’ve always sold off duplicate copies when upgrading to superior editions, even though I might not always get a lot for them, it’s still money that can reduce the price of the upgrade. Whilst extras are good, the only thing that would make me keep a duplicate is if it has an alternate cut(s). I’ve cut down on buying mainstream studio titles almost totally - the past year however was one of the most expensive since I began collecting as with Brexit looming I took advantage of multiple US sales from labels such as Mondo Macabro, Vinegar Syndrome and bought various titles from wowhd.

The backlog of unwatched titles now is a lot, coupled with watching stuff on Netflix, Prime Video etc it means I can reign in my buying for this year. I’ve bought a few things so far, and have a couple more on pre-order but those have been countered by selling stuff on eBay so I have been able to justify it. Last year I managed to knock off several titles from my want-to-buy list, so I think for this year my wallet can have a rest.

I also have a few dupes in my collection but I'm still unsure which ones I should get rid of. Paprika or Inception? Evangelion or Pacific Rim? Dances with wolves or Avatar?

That did make me laugh!

As for me - no changes. I'm only buying stuff I'm 99% sure of keeping and when the odd one slips through, it gets sold or given away. Space is a bit of an issue but I'm still under control.

I keep telling myself I'm going to cut down on the amount I buy, then 4 discs and a box set arrived today, to go with the 2 discs and box set that arrived earlier in the week.

Thanks to a recent bout of Covid I did clear a good chuck of my unwatched disc pilemountain, so it's not quite so daunting.

I need to find more time to watch these bloody movies. At the current rate I’ve gone through my collection some time in the 2050s. Having said that I really can’t resist sales so I keep buying more. I do have a wishlist but it feels like it doesn’t get any shorter (I always find new titles to add). My shelf space has also ran out so there are blu-ray piles here and there.

I enjoy looking at my collection, going through it and picking a movie to watch. Blu-rays are like lost puppies that I need to rescue: once I get one home I need to go out and save the next one.
