Thumbs up TVPredictions: "HD DVD - 5 Ways It Can Survive" (A pro Blu-ray piece)

Pretty good article actually. Don't be deceived by the title... it's actually about how much of a longshot HD DUD is to survive at all (see the Vegas style odds in the article).

HD DVD: 5 Ways It Can Survive
The high-def format will have to take some risks.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (February 6, 2008) -- Is HD DVD dead?

Listen to the pundits (including yours truly) and you would think that Blu-ray had already won the high-def disc format war. Some publications (again, including this one) have predicted that the war will officially be over by year's end.

It's easy to make such declarations. Five major studios are now supporting Blu-ray, compared to two for HD DVD. And new sales figures show that Blu-ray player and disc sales are easily outpacing HD DVD.

While it's difficult now to see how HD DVD can compete in the long run, things do change. Just ask this year's candidates for president.

So, here are five ways that HD DVD can survive in the high-def format war in 2008 -- and beyond.

1. Get the Endorsement of a Major Studio
Warner Bros.' decision last month to endorse Blu-ray exclusively was a major blow to HD DVD. However, if Toshiba, the biggest supporter of HD DVD, could persuade one of the Blu-ray studios to switch sides, it would change the dynamic of the contest.
Odds: 20-1.
Worried about declining DVD sales, the studios are anxious to end this war and, therefore, are unlikely to do anything now that might prolong it.
I think they got the odds right on 1) 2) and 4) but the odds on 3 should be 2-1 as prices will probably fall to 49$... it just won't be Toshiba that will be doing it... it will be the stores trying to get rid of those POS. As for 5)... the odds on that one should be 100-1 as Sony will NEVER release or agree to a dual format player.

It is a funny piece of satire, but I do believe Swanni meant to put 100:1 for #5.

(Maybe even 1,000:1)

Swanni needs to figure out those odds better. Sony, 100:1.
But the bottom line should be, why should it "survive". It can't win at this rate. And surviving only means it will drag down sales for both HDM formats, and destroy the HD optical disc industry, leading to digital downloads and DVDs as the only solution.
Lets face it, we need to end this war, and posting ways it can survive is not helping!

It's to get you to read the article
If it said HD DUD is dead... then you might skip it because everybody allready knows HD DUD is dead.
By giving the article such an implausible title... you can't help but be curious and read on

Funny article... but Toshiba will never get Paramount and Universal to stick with them, they have already made out plans I am sure. I'd say 50 to 1 instead of 10 to 1.

It shouldn't, and if you have go pulling out longshot-like odds in order to give HD-DVD even a remote chance for survival, than it only undergirds the argument that the format is dead but doesn't know it yet.

HD-DVD is Jeffrey Dahmer on Death Row right now. Any cries for appeals are just done for the sake of it; the gov'ner ain't gonna be grantin' no pardon here.

Default how dumb...

This list is just.. so very obvious... it's a waste of time. I can't believe it's an article on HD DVD surviving!? wtf? Not only is the shovel out, but the casket is made and the hole is dug up already. All we need to gather around are the HD DVD bastards and their supporters, bash'em in the head and throw them in!

BLU-RAY!!!! BeEeEeyatch!

So after the catchy angle that even DuD folks mights read, the article concludes: "So, bottom line: HD DVD isn't dead, but the shovels are out."
which seems to a common conclusion by most tech journalists now.
