Criterion Farewell My Concubine 4K UHD (Criterion Collection)

Farewell My Concubine (1993) will be coming to 4K UHD from Criterion in July!

Quote:
4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
  • New 4K digital restoration of the original director’s cut, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
  • One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features
  • New conversation between Chinese-cultural-studies scholar Michael Berry and producer Janet Yang
  • Documentary from 2003 on the making of the film
  • Interview from 1993 with director Chen Kaige conducted by journalist Charlie Rose
  • Trailer
  • New English subtitle translation
  • PLUS: An essay by author and scholar Pauline Chen

New cover by Eric Skillman
Quote:
A breathtakingly intimate romance unfolds against a sweeping backdrop of social upheaval in renowned director Chen Kaige’s sumptuous saga of passion, fate, and the transcendent possibilities of art. Spanning fifty years of twentieth-century Chinese history, Farewell My Concubine follows aspiring actors Dieyi (a heartbreaking Leslie Cheung) and Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) as they emerge from a childhood of brutal training to become Beijing-opera stars, with life mirroring art as Dieyi’s unrequited love for Xiaolou and the country’s changing political tides engulf them in their own personal tragedies of jealousy and betrayal. The first Chinese film to win the Palme d’Or is epic filmmaking of the highest order—visually and emotionally ravishing from frame to exquisite frame.

Bit puzzled by this being the only 4K release in July that doesn't seem to have HDR, but I'm sure it will look amazing regardless!

This is the upcoming Carlotta UHD: https://laboutique.carlottafilms.com...-de-chen-kaige

This will be a FiM or LSP encode. Also, the Carlotta UHD has 2.0 audio in addition to 5.1!

For some reason I didn't expect this to come from Criterion but it seems absolutely tailor-made for Criterion.

Only French subtitles though, unfortunately.

Carlotta France have just shown packaging pics of their new UHD and it shows that their master actually has HDR / DV compared to the SDR-only Criterion. It’d be interesting to see if it’s a homebrewed grade but they could have also made a HDR master out of Wings of Desire for example if they wanted to sell all of their 4Ks with HDR.

The slip from the Carolotta set looks mostly like the slip from the Nova blu-ray.
I was thinking of selling my Nova set on Ebay, but since the Nova is a Criterion like scanvo case, I think I'll keep the slip and put the Criterion 4k in it. The nova slip is beautiful. The Caralotta might be just as nice.

Feel free to visit the Carlotta release thread in the international section for more info. I’ve already posted caps there. It’s a gorgeous UHD with an excellent encode by LSP.
