This has been mentioned in the Jackass 3D, Golden and Silver Age threads. I picked Yonkers but you can change the locations to see what's playing where...

JAWS 3-D is playing in many places. My local Alamo franchises - all within the general region are owned by a single franchisee - don't really do 3D screenings because they didn't invest in the setups, so only two of the locations do 3D showings, one of them rarely.

Saw Jackass 3D at the Los Angeles Alamo. All 3D glasses were pre-placed on each seat's table. Classy. The theater uses Xpand 3D, which I found very bright and contrasty. It was also a bit prone to ghosting, but that could have been my low viewing angle, as the DTLA Alamo has all of their screens placed high above the seats. The screen was also a bit small, which made the Avatar 2 3D trailer less impressive, but for Jackass 3D it was pretty dang good.
The pre-show was fantastic. Lots of vintage anaglyph trailers, plus 2D trailers for several 3D Film Archive releases. The waitress was well-acquainted with the format and let us know that the trailershow would end with a 3D trailer (which was for Avatar 2). Overall what the Alamo DTLA lacked in an ideal screen size or viewing angle for 3D, they made up for in excellent service and programming. I'd be happy to return for another 3D screening, especially if it's another rarity like Jackass 3D which never made it to 3D Blu-ray, or perhaps just a solid 3D crowd movie like Dredd 3D. There's far too few 3D repertoire screenings, so I hope the large turnout for The Third Dimension series across the country encourages Alamo to keep 'em coming. |
