I'm planning to upgrade my HTiB into individual components, starting with the Onkyo 605 and just had a pair of quick questions.
1. The TX-SR605 in no way affects the video quality when the HDMI signal is passed through the receiver and out into the television, correct? and 2. The Onkyo spits out 90 watts RMS per speaker. I would have to get speakers that could handle at least that, i.e., I couldn't get speakers that handled a max of 85 watts RMS? Thanks in advance. |

#2. That's the way I understand it to be. The speakers taking more wattage than they are designed to will be damaging to the speaker. I'd suggest finding speakers that can handle a minimum of 100 Watts, just to be safe. |

I believe the 605 only upscales analog signals through HDMI to 720p, you don't have to worry about digital signals being affected. Also, RMS wattage is an average rating, so you can match lower RMS rated speakers with this receiver with no problem. But you'll be hard pressed to find lower RMS rated quality speakers in the market today, as most of them can handle between 100W to 200W easily.

Why even waste $200 on crappy speakers when you can wait a little longer and perhaps save a little more dough for something much better? Or is waiting not an option?

Well, G - waiting could be an option, but there's other fiscal obligations I have to take into account, so it might be now or never... ...and $200 a speaker should be better than a $400 HTiB, one assumes. |

Then 2007 came and I got my first Blu-ray player, so I naturally had to upgrade the sound system as well, so I got a receiver, then the speakers I spoke of earlier, then about 60 Blu-rays. So, now I'm back to square one. I can only dream of being debt now. ![]() |

I was going to get the floor stands, but decided to wall mount them instead. After all, each speaker comes with the wall wall mount bracket in the box. |

no no no. its not entirely necessary to keep your speaker power rating equal to or more than your amp is putting out.
yes, its always favorable to match your speaker rating with the amp output rating, but its not required by any stretch of the imagination. long story short, the leading cause of blown speakers are from not powering your speakers enough. I.E, running 100watt speakers with an amp only putting out 75 watts or so. Its always favorable to have your amp push out EQUAL to or MORE power than what your speakers are rated at. I'm not telling you go out and get a 140watt/ch receiver for speakers that are rated at 50 watts, but dont underpower your speakers. i cant stress that enough. also, always be weary of power ratings from company to company. RMS is the best means for judging a speaker or receivers actual power rating for an extended period of time. but a lot of things need to get factored in to the equation such as speaker efficiency, THD (total harmonic distortion), etc., etc. anyways, dont underpower your speakers. you'll do more harm than over powering them if you arent careful.
