Default A Few HT Questions to Ask

I'm planning to upgrade my HTiB into individual components, starting with the Onkyo 605 and just had a pair of quick questions.

1. The TX-SR605 in no way affects the video quality when the HDMI signal is passed through the receiver and out into the television, correct?

and 2. The Onkyo spits out 90 watts RMS per speaker. I would have to get speakers that could handle at least that, i.e., I couldn't get speakers that handled a max of 85 watts RMS?

Thanks in advance.

I can't speak on the 605 specifically, but I have Klipsch 100 watt speakers and I had a receiver which pumped out 110 watts, and they are fine.

#1. That is correct.

#2. That's the way I understand it to be. The speakers taking more wattage than they are designed to will be damaging to the speaker. I'd suggest finding speakers that can handle a minimum of 100 Watts, just to be safe.

I believe the 605 only upscales analog signals through HDMI to 720p, you don't have to worry about digital signals being affected. Also, RMS wattage is an average rating, so you can match lower RMS rated speakers with this receiver with no problem. But you'll be hard pressed to find lower RMS rated quality speakers in the market today, as most of them can handle between 100W to 200W easily.

I asked since I was looking at some JBLs that only took 85 - I'll probably spend $200 a speaker tops at the moment. Have to be floor-standing ones too, bookshelf ones just don't cut it anymore. Thanks for the help, fellas.

Why even waste $200 on crappy speakers when you can wait a little longer and perhaps save a little more dough for something much better? Or is waiting not an option?

Haha, that's what I just realized looking through Best Buy. $2000 altogether is my budget, but - I'm planning ahead, that money probably won't come in for a month or two.

Well, G - waiting could be an option, but there's other fiscal obligations I have to take into account, so it might be now or never...

...and $200 a speaker should be better than a $400 HTiB, one assumes.

If you want to settle for something that's still quality and fits your apartment size's needs (and yours of course) and doesn't cost a lot then get the Klipsch Quintet II or III. I got mine for $240 from Ebay last summer and I love it. It sounds phenomenal for now and it'll hold me over until I am really ready to upgrade to perhaps the Reference Series Klipsch or something similar. I highly recommend them. The only other speaker you'd have to get if you don't already have one is a subwoofer. This set doesn't come with one.

Haha, I'm upset I became the regular college kid in the small apartment! I actually have a nice house in South Miami. (I sold all my Incan treasures). I'll look into those right now. I probably would keep whatever purchases I made now for a minimum of 2-3 years.

And taxes...maybe. Double .

My bad JJ, I don't mean to presume that you don't have an accommodating crib, it's just that you keep talking about you being a college student and all. I'm just trying to save you some money bro.

Haha, I like to think of that as my excuse for not having nicer stuff! Shhh! You'll blow my secret.

Why oh why did I have to go into Best Buy that one fateful day in March of last year and see the Blu-Ray display? Life might be a bit easier and less erosive on my wallet.

Yes, well you're not the only one making similar type mistakes. Try this. I paid down all my credit cards in the summer of 2006, but instead of trying to finally save money and be debt free, I ended up buying a projector and a screen. Then in the fall of 2006 my car took a dive, so I was forced to buy a new one. I ended up getting a brand new one. (hello 6 more years of monthly payments)

Then 2007 came and I got my first Blu-ray player, so I naturally had to upgrade the sound system as well, so I got a receiver, then the speakers I spoke of earlier, then about 60 Blu-rays. So, now I'm back to square one.

I can only dream of being debt now.

I'm still debt-free - I barely touch my credit cards, I'm straight debit at the moment - although the temptation to do so is always present. I figure there'll be time for nicer things in the future, and by comparison to others at this point in my life, things are nice enough as it is. Can't recall how many times last year in my Blu-Ray furor I skimped on food to complete my Blu collection - ah, bread and water. Good times. Not letting THAT happen again though. One Blu a week. Last year it was like, 2-3 a week for 3 months. That added up!

I hear ya. You have to fight that urge within at all cost.

If $2000 is your budget, look into the Bowers & Wilkins M-1 satellite speakers. They are very nice. You can probably get 5 satellites and the AS-2 subwoofer for $2000. I know that I did. The only downside is that the floor stands and speaker wire sell seperately. But, these speakers offer a very high yield of sound quality and don't take up much space.

I was going to get the floor stands, but decided to wall mount them instead. After all, each speaker comes with the wall wall mount bracket in the box.

no no no. its not entirely necessary to keep your speaker power rating equal to or more than your amp is putting out.

yes, its always favorable to match your speaker rating with the amp output rating, but its not required by any stretch of the imagination.

long story short, the leading cause of blown speakers are from not powering your speakers enough. I.E, running 100watt speakers with an amp only putting out 75 watts or so. Its always favorable to have your amp push out EQUAL to or MORE power than what your speakers are rated at. I'm not telling you go out and get a 140watt/ch receiver for speakers that are rated at 50 watts, but dont underpower your speakers. i cant stress that enough.

also, always be weary of power ratings from company to company. RMS is the best means for judging a speaker or receivers actual power rating for an extended period of time. but a lot of things need to get factored in to the equation such as speaker efficiency, THD (total harmonic distortion), etc., etc.

anyways, dont underpower your speakers. you'll do more harm than over powering them if you arent careful.
