There are big releases and huge releases, but Sentai Filmworks goes above and beyond to make the impossible possible with the acquisition of one of anime’s most renowned and sought after sagas: the mega-epic LEGEND OF THE GALACTIC HEROES! Originally launched as an OVA series, the initial set would continue for an incredible 110 episodes before the sprawling storyline, which documents interstellar war on a galactic scale and from multiple viewpoints, began to spin off a dizzying array of sequels, side stories and remakes.



Mirroring the story’s central thread of warriors learning by trial of fire, LEGEND OF THE GALACTIC HEROES has served as the proving grounds for so many up and coming animation legends that it would require pages to list them all. However, few stars shine as brightly as those of the steady hands of the commanders who launched the series: legendary director Noboru Ishiguru, who created the transforming mecha genre with his legendary Super Dimension Fortress Macross, gave birth to the OVA with Megazone 23, and guided the voyages of Space Battleship Yamato and many other classics, and animation production house Kitty, whose other gifts to anime include such classics as Ranma ½, Ninja Scroll (TV), Urusei Yatsura, Yawara! and Maison Ikkoku.

I do like this news, but that article also mentions having both Seasons of Higurashi as well as the OVA being licensed which makes me quite happy. Always dislike when a series is incomplete when brought over to America, so this kind of news is always welcoming.

This is how blown away by this announcement I am.

Seriously, just HOW?! DLW himself a few years ago at a convention even admitted that it wasn't financially viable. Companies have tried for decades and failed every single time. The magnitude of this announcement is just absolutely enormous.

On another note, it's worth noting the JPBD's are unfortunately just upscales. Curious if they have DVD or BD rights. If it's the former it's not a massive loss for me, just glad the damn show is finally licensed.

Same Creator. Same universe. But 2 different mysteries. 1 takes place on a small village and the other takes place in a family's mansion on a small island where a family gathering goes wrong during a pretty bad storm.

So basically 2 completely different stories set in the same universe.

Umineko needs a 2nd Season badly. Higurashi however you get the whole story or at least all of the important stuff. Both series have their Questions Arcs and Answers Arc, but Umineko's Anime was left with only the Questions Arcs of the story without the Answers. So wouldn't know the whole mystery unless you either play the games that it is based on, or other ways the story is told on like maybe manga.

It has the same reputation as Rose of Versailles did before that finally got licensed.

It's one of the most important anime shows of all time. Whether it is "good" or not relative to one's tastes is subjective of course.

AFAIC, this is a quality space opera that still holds up pretty well today. People who love Game of Thrones can easily jump into this sci-fi variant with equal amount of political dissent and unpredictable twists.

I'm glad with whatever format this series will be released. Now if only someone can make Harmony Gold budge so the world can be exposed to all the Macross shows. Macross Delta is forthcoming, and we shouldn't miss that one at least.

If my loathing for HG could be harnessed as a power source then it would likely exceed the output of the sun.

I'm hoping that future Macross projects include English subs. Although HG would likely try and stake a claim to the English language itself....

Wikipedia has been recently updated but it lists only the core OVA series of 110 episodes as licensed by Sentai. Though that's 110 more episodes than available before I'll take it
