Germany Hellraiser (1987) 4K UHD

According to this unboxing video, "Hellraiser" will probably also be released on 4K UHD from Turbine soon.

(from 6: 22 min to listen)

Only familiar with their Texas Chainsaw 4K release and I sold that off because the compression was so pitiful. Hopefully they do right by this.

Oh yeah, that one is gone. I’m sure a standard UHD release will follow, though.

Fantastic news. I hope that this will be graded either under the supervision of Clive Barker or by using prints (ideally an answer print) as reference.

The film as it has appeared on home video for over the past two decades is nothing like how it originally looked.

Here's a post I made regarding Hellraiser in 2018, where I explain in more detail and provide 35mm scans of a print:

Its likely Arrow will release this in 4k also.
Crash was released by Turbine in UHD and Arrow had rights and released it also.
Arrow also hold Hellraiser rights in UK so hope we get it from arrow too.

You don't have a film negative.

Negatives are not color-timed, so that wouldn’t represent the intended final look anyway. That’s why PTA and Nolan use transfers of timed interpositives, with photochemical color-correction baked-in for dcp/home video releases.

Just to hilight JCF's point further, here's a cap from the the arrow BD and a recently scanned print from an ongoing Hellraiser project on fanres.

The print cap has not been adjusted in any way so its very dark, but it should serve to show the colour difference at least. Even though the arrow BD was a fairly new scan, here compared directly with the original color timing, it has the pinkish/magenta grading I'd normally associate with older dvd era masters. The original look is much more stylish. Fittingly moody and gothic, lovely blues contrasting that deathly alabastar cenobite skin.

As JCF has said, hopefully whoever is handling the new restoration/grading work on this will do the due diligence and try to replicate the original look for this 4k release.

35mm feels really different. Teals and blues. Cenobites skin looks greenish like real corpses.

Call me cynical but I highly doubt Turbine would dip in making a new master for this. I bet it's going to just be merely the current HD master by Arrow that's been upscaled to 4K with an HDR pass with nothing else to it apart from a fancy box and perhaps some new bonus features.

It just seems like the most business-sensible decision given the remaster wasn't that long ago and although the colors are screwy, only a small fraction of people really care about that sort of thing.

So unless Clive Barker puts his foot down as JCF described, which is possible albeit unlikely, we're gonna be stuck with the current master and its lifeless color grade for a while. At least with the print scan slowly underway, a fan regrade of the UHD would at least be possible.
