Default Why did Dwayne Johnson succeed where Vin Diesel failed?

Hear me out, i feel these two actors/ movie stars are fairly similar. They both like to play/ project the macho tough guy image and both make mostly action/ sci fi movies.

When Johnson joined the Fast and Furious franchise for Fast 5 it seemed like a match made in heaven, and he fit in like a glove. Johnson however has managed to achieve huge success outside of the F&F franchise however, whereas as Diesel has not. In fact Diesel hasn't come remotely close to Johnson's success outside of F&F. It definitely doesn't just boil down to "well one is talented, the other is not" as an argument could certainly be made that they have very similar talents/ range, which isn't much.

It seemed Diesel built up an amount of resentment towards Johnson and one can't help but feel this could in part be due to the fact that Johnson has been far more successful. I appreciate that more recently, an argument could be made that Johnson's career is on a bit of a downturn now, but even so, he still has a good number of big, successful movies under his belt. Diesel, outside of F&F had Last Witch Hunter which did OK and Bloodshot, which flopped (but was that in part due to world events that kicked in shortly after the release?). Sure Diesel got to provide the voice of Groot but this is hardly what one could consider a leading role for him, as he doesn't even appear onscreen.

What do you think, is Johnson more savvy as to what the audience wants, is he just more lucky? I wonder what Diesel's career will be like when F&F ends.
