Wasn't this a Fox Searchlight Release back in the day? BFI is a much better home for a film like this.

Cant wait to upgrade from the DVD. Ray Winstone is an absolute force of nature in this film. Astonishingly naturalistic performances from the entire cast, with Kathy Burke deservedly winning best actor at Cannes.

I'm looking forward to the audio commentary.
Doug Urbanski, who played Larry Summers (President of Harvard - US Treasury Secretary) in The Social Network will be well worth a listen, obviously including Gary Oldman. The commentary Gary did for The Firm is excellent. |

Great film. I remember renting it on VHS in 1998 and was blown away. I was used to seeing Kathy Burke in the Harry Enfield show; this was quite a revelation.
Very much looking forward to the Blu-ray. I rarely listen to commentaries anymore, but this one will be a must-listen. |

I just got my copy and watched it. The Blu-ray is fabulous, the remastered image is glorious and has a lovely grain pattern. I watched with the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track (for some reason, you have to choose between LPCM 2.0 or the 5.1--in that order--before starting the film and I wonder why, there is a Dolby logo on the film, but also an SDDS logo, so the 5.1 should be original and was, I think, the only option on the UK DVD) and the audio is very good as well.
This was my first time seeing the film and I thought it was incredible. It's hard to believe it only won 2 BAFTAs, until you remember that The Full Monty also came out that year and beat it in many categories. Less clear is how it got zero Oscar nominations, since it released in February 1998 in the USA and so wasn't competing for Oscars with The Full Monty, but then again, Oscars don't often go to films released early in the year and 1998 was the year Shakespeare in Love best Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture, so it was not the the Oscars' finest hour. I was so exhilarated by the film itself that I simply couldn't go into the extras tonight. But the packaging is both stylish and functional. I will drive into the extras shortly, but for me I think this could end up in the top ten releases of the year. |

Yep, my first time seeing this too and it didn't disappoint. For some reason I expected just a 2 Disc case but this first print comes in a slipcase with a thick booklet. A very nice package.
I went through some of the special features already and all the interviews are excellent (especially the 50min one with Oldman). Great to hear from most of the leading cast too (which seems so rare on extras these days). Highly recommended! |
