Default Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) coming from Arrow

Slaughterhouse-Five Blu-ray

Quote:
Description
BILLY PILGRIM LIVES – FROM TIME TO TIME TO TIME…

Past, present and future collide in darkly satirical fashion in Slaughterhouse-Five! Based on Kurt Vonnegut’s classic 1969 novel, this tale of time travel and alien abduction emerged as part of a wave of more cerebral science-fiction films in the late 60s to early 70s, elevating the genre beyond the B-movie fare of previous decades.

Upstate New York, 1968. Mild-mannered Billy Pilgrim (Michael Sacks, The Sugarland Express) finds himself “unstuck in time”. Traveling back and forth across the entire span of his existence, he experiences key events of his life in a random order, including his formative years, the firebombing of Dresden and finally, at some undefined point in the future, his surreal adventures on a distant planet.

Praised by Vonnegut himself for its fidelity to his novel, Slaughterhouse-Five boasts assured direction by George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and a memorable score by renowned concert pianist Glenn Gould. Now exclusively restored in 4K, Slaughterhouse-Five shines like never before, reinforcing its timeless appeal.

I'm interested in checking this one out. I've heard that Satoshi Kon was inspired by it.

I am very excited about this Slaughter-House Five release and it will definitely be day one for me. What retailers are the best bet for getting Arrow titles at a fair price on release day? I've had mixed results with Amazon.

Are you kidding?

Diabolik all the way. I usually get Arrow releases one or two weeks early in fact. Awesome customer service and they ship with care. Prices can sometimes be a tiny bit higher, though not usually on Arrow titles. Support a fantastic indie retailer!

* Just checked, and it's currently $24.99 plus a flat $5.00 shipping. No sales tax, no fuss.

Those disappointed by the redundant and much-too-mainstream announcement of TWoWS (including me) surely will find no reason to complain about this.

Wow, big announcement for me...been near the top of my wishlist for years. Fantastic film that strangely isn’t talked about much. It’s a brilliant adaptation.

It's also a film that succeeds on many levels -- sci-fi, fantasy, anti-war, comedy. Is it pure sci-fi or are the Tralfamadorians part of Billy Pilgrim's fantasy world that he escapes to as a coping mechanism to deal with the tragedies around him? It's dark and funny at the same time. A great adaptation of a great novel that a lot of people thought would be un-filmable. And it also features Valerie Perrine topless

Probably the best thing George Roy Hill ever did.

Get it!

I am excited about this, would be even more thrilled for a decent BR take on "Mother Night" which was also quite faithful to the book.
It would probably be too much to ask for the take on Breakfast of Champions on BR, too.
I know not everyone likes it but it's my favorite KVJ book.
And if they are able to release Howard the Duck on BR.....

It was a really long wait, but this sounds like it was well worth it.

I loved Breakfast of Champions, but hated the movie. Too much Bruce Willis and I thought Albert Finney was miscast. In my alternate universe, I make Kilgore Trout the nexus of the story and he’s played by Harry Dean Stanton.

Mother Night was okay, but it’s not one of my favorite Vonneguts.

Vonnegut is my favorite author, and Slaughterhouse Five is my favorite of his novels.

The movie isn't perfect, but I enjoy it, and am looking forward to getting this once it's available.

I totally agree with you on Mother Night. Along with SF, they are my two favorite film adaptations of Vonnegut's work. For me, they are both classics in their own right.

My favorite KVJ novels would be Sirens of Titan (epic in its scope), Mother Night, and Deadeye Dick.

IMHO, Slaughterhouse Five is a tremendously ambitious film that succeeds in translating the ironic and bittersweet tone of the famous novel successfully to the screen.

I am a fan.

I guess no movie is "perfect", but this one comes pretty freaking close.

It's always going to feel "less-than" when compared to the novel. That pretty much goes for any film that's an adaptation of a novel that's considered a classic.

Honestly; I always felt George Roy Hill was an overrated director but Slaughterhouse-Five is a standout and easily the best thing he's done.

Darn. Just bought the Fabulous Films version from the UK. It's not a bad transfer but it's not that great either.

Pre-ordered from Diabolik yesterday.

Glad to see I wasn’t the only one tempted by the imports. Luckily I held out since the dvd was “good enough” for the time being. I can’t believe we are getting such a stacked release. Despite the popularity of the book, This is a movie that for some reason has fallen into relative obscurity.

Speaking of the book...For me it was one of those all important books you read in 8th or 9th grade (when you start reading more adult books) that really grabs you and sticks. It was years until I even knew there was a film version...and for me it doesn’t disappoint.

Pretty excited to delve into this release, though I don’t have much time for it today.
