Sorry if there is a thread on this, just couldn't find one.
I sometimes wish Pixar never existed. I miss the classic hand drawn animation used since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the early 90s. I think hand drawn animation reached its prime when The Little Mermaid came out along with B&B, Aladdin, and the LK. It seems like a lot more effort is put into hand drawn animation while CGI looks lazily put together. I don't mind stop motion once in awhile, but I just really miss hand drawn. I have to admit, CGI looks really good for action sequences but let's face it, action sequences are barely used in kids movies. This is off topic, but I miss the songs that hand drawn animation use to have. Pixar doesn't even use any songs in their movies (characters singing). *I also admit when CGI is used with hand drawn, it looks great when done right. If I had to choose one, it's easily hand drawn for me. What do you guys think? I made this thread because I don't think we will ever see hand drawn animation ever again... ![]() Last edited by jasonjl; 05-06-2013 at 12:46 AM. |

I love them all for different reasons and styles.
Pixar films are beautiful, what they do isn't easy at all... their storytelling is what makes them special though. I wish there were more studios willing to do Stop Motion. The Nightmare Before Christmas and ParaNormin are amazing visually. Classic Animation was awesome... I miss films like that, I still watch a lot of them. |

you made this thread, asking this question and didn't make a voting poll?
![]() ![]() all, as long as they look good and are entertaining. each has their own purpose, look & style. none are necessarily better than the other. all done right, with good story and good voice actors are going to be a treat for the eyes & ears! |

They are all good for certain things, but in general for me...
1. Stop-motion 2. Hand drawn 3. Computer animation Stop-motion and hand drawn animation could flip flop on any given day, but most of the time I'd say stop-motion is my favorite. Computer animation would pretty much always be in third place. |

Pixar had absolutely nothing to do with the demise of 2D animation, so wishing that they never existed is silly. If you want to be specific, the one movie that actually popularized the CGI insurgence was Shrek, not the Pixar films.
And movies like How To Train Your Dragon, the Kung Fu Panda movies, Tangled, and Wreck-it-Ralph are all far from being "lazily" put together. Honestly, if Dreamworks and Disney both continue the quality output that they have been for the past few years, I don't care what medium they use to animate their movies. |

Hand-drawn is my favorite by FAR. CGI animation is absolutely gorgeous today, except for on a bunch of TV cartoons, but I just wish CG's popularity didn't mean pretty much the disappearance of hand drawn. Stop motion I enjoy in strides, but it isn't what I'd choose over the other two. Aside from Aardman, there aren't many stop motion animated films I love.

I think you took it the wrong way when I wrote "lazily", I just wanted to emphasize how hand drawn animation looks like a lot of time was put into it compared to CG. Don't get me wrong, CGI does require a lot of work but hand drawn looks like it requires a lot MORE work. The point of this thread is to see how many people miss hand drawn animation because it seems like we won't ever see it again. Quote:

Traditional cel and hand-drawn animation has so much more class and style to it than CGI animation. CGI is cool for certain projects but it seems to have completely decimated the market for hand-drawn animation in the West. American animation has always been geared for young children and kids these days seem more impressed by CGI.
![]() Thankfully Japan still continues to love traditional animation and I don't see it going away over there. |

While I don't agree with the notion that CGI animated films require any less work than hand-drawn films, I agree that it is unfortunate that the major U.S. animated studios have become almost entirely limited to producing CGI features. I would definitely like to see them tackle more hand-drawn films.
That said, many, many hand-drawn films are being produced today, just not by the major U.S. animation studios. If you look to Japan and France, they have a lot of hand-drawn animated films, many of which are being recognized internationally. (Of course it's not limited to those two countries... It's just that the animated films coming from those countries seem to be getting the most recognition outside their home countries. And also, if you look to some indie productions, you see traditional animated films coming from the U.S. as well.) I'm sure you're talking about the U.S. (because obviously lots are being released in other countries), but I must mention that in terms of major releases, Disney released Princess and the Frog in 2009 and Winnie the Pooh in 2011. Ghibli's Secret World of Arietty , while not a U.S. production, also recieved a wide-release in the U.S. last year. |

I like the combination of cgi and hand drawn (just look at 'Paper man'....so fluid with its animation). Don't care much for stop motion (not to say I don't have favorites of this type though. I love Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and Frankenweeine).

I like them all so much it's hard to choose one over the other. Most of my favorite animated moves are 2D so I will go with that.

The Nightmare Before Christmas, Chicken Run, Coraline and James And The Giant Peach are all favourite animated films of mine, done in the Stop Motion process rather than CG or hand-drawn. I just prefer the depth and art to a Stop Motion film rather than more conventional means.
