Exclamation Faulty 3D Blu-ray discs - glitches freezing bronzing disc rot etc

I thought I'd maintain a list of known faulty 3D Blu-rays as sadly there will be some that were badly manufactured (at least in their initial run) and have or will become unplayable, while others have glitches or don't actually play in 3D.

3D Safari: Africa (US edition - one eye is brighter than the other)
009 RE: Cyborg (Australian edition - center and right audio channels have been swapped)
1920: Battle of Warsaw (German edition - 3D goes out of sync)
Alpha and Omega (Brazilian edition - 3D is out of sync)
Always: Sunset on Third Street '64 (Japanese edition - 3D disc freezes up, there was a fixed disc issued)
Anadolu Atesi AKA Fire of Anatolia (Turkish edition - playback is glitchy, stuttering and choppy framerate)
Bolts & Blip (Brazilian edition - 3D is glitchy)
Boogie (US and Australian editions - freezes at a couple of points, at least in some players)
A Christmas Carol (US edition - disc may become unplayable over time)
Comin' At Ya! (US edition - disc may become unplayable over time)
Dark World (Brazilian edition - doesn't play in 3D)
Friday the 13th Part 3 (US edition - credits sequence has incorrect 3D placement, a replacement disc was issued, marked as R1)
Human Body (Italian edition - center and right audio channels have been swapped)
Humpback Whales (US edition - at least one of the English audio tracks is badly mixed so background music drowns out the narration)
Iceman (Hong Kong edition - one eye is brighter than the other)
I, Frankenstein (UK edition - disc may become unplayable over time)
The Illusionauts (Turkish edition - 3D is glitchy)
Jock the Hero Dog (German edition - freezes at one point)
Jumanji: The Next Level (Australian edition - stutters and freezes in some older players)
Moomins and the Comet Chase (Scandinavian edition - the English audio cuts out halfway through)
The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature (German edition - the English audio is badly mixed so background music drowns out dialogue)
Piranha 3DD (UK edition - disc may become unplayable over time)
The Polar Express (US edition - disc may become unplayable over time)
Revenge of the Creature (US edition - initial release was in SBS format, a replacement disc was issued)
The Second Sight (Hong Kong edition - some users have reported the disc freezing around 75 mins in, possibly a bad pressing)
Sing 2 (Australian edition - on-screen text/signage is missing in one eye)
The Snow Queen (Brazilian edition - doesn't play in 3D, image is just 2D pushed back like an autoconversion)
Spy Kids 3D (Netherlands edition - disc may become unplayable over time)
Stanley's Game Seven (Canadian edition - 5.1 audio track has issues, the 2.0 track is fine however)
StreetDance 3: All Stars (Netherlands edition - disc may become unplayable over time)
Titeuf (Brazilian edition - 3D is out of sync)
Twixt AKA Virginia (Brazilian edition - doesn't play in 3D)

Those are the ones I have found in my collection so far or have been reported by others but there are likely to be more. I did have a US edition of Transformers Age of Extinction that glitched out in one scene but I checked the disc and it was a mess on the underside so that was a damaged disc rather than a faulty one. I also had issues with the Australian release of Jumanji: The Next Level which stutters and freezes on my player but plays fine in my PS3, I added it here as I tested three separate copies, not that it matters as the disc is long out of print.

That's right, there are a few where there's a problem with the 3D rather than the disc itself failing, but I would say that qualifies as faulty. The Brazilian Bolts & Blip is another and I recall there's an edition of Twixt that doesn't play the 3D sequence in 3D.

I think the Australian edition (and corresponding USA BD-R copy) of Boogie (2009) was known to have freezing issues. Also the Brazilian version of Dark World (2010) is another where MVC is tagged but there is no 3D playback.

I do remember discussion about the US edition of Boogie reportedly freezing but I have the Australian one and don't recall any issues watching it.

There's a German animated title that freezes at one point too, will have to look it up, I think it's Jock the Hero Dog...

What's odd is that if I choose to play it in 2-D from the title menu, it plays fine through both parts. But, if I play it from 3-D, and then switch to 2-D from the LG TV (by hitting a button 2D/3D toggle button the remote), it plays in 2-D but still freezes at 1:15:00 and 1:15:56 marks.

Kind of bummed out. I paid some $$ bucks to buy it off an Australian seller off ebay. I'm not sure if I should return it or live with it.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Australian release ?

Some more:
  1. The 3D version of Always: Sunset on Third Street '64 has defects for many users, myself included.

Supposedly it is possible to get a replacement disc, I have not done so but may try through Amazon support.

  2. Anadolu Atesi (Fire of Anatolia, turkey BD) - although it is 3D, the framerate is choppy and stuttery/jumpy. I don't think this has a database entry

  3. The Snow Queen 1 brazilian version is not actually 3d, it's just 2d sunken back. I've noted some other test results here since there are a lot of differences between the 3DBD versions available.

  4. Titeuf brazilian version - the right eye starts 1 frame early and is unwatchable in 3D on any equipment I've tried (it's also cropped).

  5. Alpha and Omega brazilian version has a similar eye sync issue as Titeuf (plus a really bad low-bitrate looking encode).

If memory serves right, the right and left eye don’t match in either lighting or color, making it an uncomfortable watch.

1920 Die Letzte Schlacht 3D AKA 1920 Battle of Warsaw.
The Blu-ray disk has a problem where the left and right images go out of sync.

The English audio on Moomins Comet Chase is broken - it cuts out halfway through.

Not a fault as such (and I've no evidence) but I felt the colours on Asterix Obelix Britannia were a little washed out on the Brazilian release.

I know mine and at least one other person posted it won’t load over time. The menu goes bad. I stopped my replacement in the middle, put in the bad disc and it would play because it picked up in the film, not the menu.

I've had 2 US 3D blu-rays fail on me:

- Disney's Christmas Carol 3D (animated Jim Carey). Played fine in my blu-ray player when I bought it new years ago. Went to play it a few Christmas's ago and it was totally corrupted. Played up to a certain chapter and then pixellated and couldn't play past that point or skip chapters. Unreadable in my PC. I had to re-buy the disc again.

- The Polar Express 3D. Same situation. Bought it brand new when it was first released and it played fine. A few years ago I tried to play it and it was corrupted. Unreadable. Had to re-buy.

I'll have to see if I can make a backup of my copy before that happens.

Monster House (US) doesn't play on my Panasonic UB820 (it gets stuck in the loading flashlight animation) but plays fine on my PS4. I got it new last year from Amazon. Haven't tried other players. Does anyone have the same issue?

My Comin At Ya seems to load and play fine. So far none of my 3d titles other than I Frankenstein has failed.

I was after the Moomins 3d one at some point, it's sad to hear it's amongst the problem discs. It's oop anyway, I believe?

Mine was fine too last time I tested it but knowing it has failed for others makes me nervous.

Quite a few of the discs on the list are OOP but it's still worth noting the issues with them as I certainly wouldn't want to pay big money for the Moomins disc without knowing the English audio track isn't all there.

That stinks about Comin At Ya. I actually have two copies because my dog decided the first was a toy and the case and art has holes punctured all over it. Planned to just sell it cheap or print new art from the replacement to include with that sale. Guess I’ll just keep it as a backup disc.

Revenge of the Creature replacement is a new one to me. I guess I will have to check mine and hopefully it is okay.

I guess friday the 13th part 3 might belong here with the opening credits error (replacement disc was issued with R1 stamp)
