Default The Mole People (Remake produced by TWD creator Robert Kirkman)

Quote:
Universal Pictures continues to tap into its classic monsters vault. The studio has acquired a pitch for a revamp of 1956 horror film The Mole People pitched by Chris Winterbauer, who’ll write the script.

In the new take, a woman travels to a town veiled in a conspiracy to rescue her grandchildren from their father. To do this, she must fight through hell in the underground tunnels where the Mole People reside. In the 1956 original, archaeologists stumble into the underground lair of a race of darkness-dwellers who can see in low light and have no pigmentation after being out of the light for so long. The high priest who rules the small pocket of mole people is threatened by the newcomers and wants them dead.

While not on the popularity level of, say, the upcoming April 14 Uni release Renfield – that Chris McKay-directed drama stars Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his weary title henchman – The Mole People certainly has a cool underground world worth excavating.

The pic will be produced by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Dave Alpert at Skybound. Universal execs Holly Goline, Jay Polidoro and Matt Reilly are overseeing for the studio.

I'm a little surprised to hear this. It would make more sense to update The Creature From the Black Lagoon which has been discussed since the early days of Fangoria Magazine.

John Carpenter wanted to do an updated Creature; Universal said "great! But first, we want you to do this Village of the Damned remake. After that's a hit, we'll do Creature!"

Oops.

Anyway, the original Mole People is very boring and doesn't appear to be considered "untouchable", so why not?

Why? Why can't they just leave the classics alone? There is no way they can improve on the film, so why even try?!?!?

[Show spoiler] Just kidding

Which is kinda funny since Damned is a bit of an obscure flick compared to one of their big Universal Monsters. Still, least the Village remake gave us Carpenter's best film score.

As for The Mole People, I think the only people who really know this film are MSTies and the most hardcore Sci-Fi fanatics, so I don't think there's a huge fanbase for the film to potentially upset. At least, it will be funny to have a major studio remake a film from MST3K haha.
