It never had much of a chance at the box office, but I've always liked this one and am a bit surprised it didn't become more of a cult film. The military setting is a novel approach, it's visually inventive with a lot of cool well thought out shots, and Meg Tilly crushes it as a pod person. Always thought her being a step mother to the older daughter and "invading" the family to begin with was good subtext.
Makes me wish Abel Ferrara had been given studio budgets a few more times in his career as well. Even his run and gun low budget guerilla film making movies look cool, but here when he had the time and money to plan out the shots more with Bojan Bazelli, the results are spectacular. |
