Wow this is nice, a Netflix 4k announcement so early!

This movie is largely in Spanish, so this release will not be accessible in the English speaking world (and Netflix acquired US, Canada, and the UK for this one). Hopefully something comes to pass down the line from somewhere else.

Damn it didn't occur to me that it wouldn't have english subs. Well criterion has done Audiard films before, so it would make sense if this joins their netflix release catalog

It's not a Netflix movie, they bought the movie in some countries, but there is no reason why Pathé wouldn't release a blu-ray or a blu-ray 4k.

Looks very interesting will watch it and if it's good I'll buy the 4K and add subtitles.

Jacques Audiard has writtern/directed lots of very good films lets hope this is another.

Just got my copy from France (I'm in the US), and it indeed comes with French subtitles only. Seeing is how I rip all my discs (yes, controversial), i was able to add an english subtitle track the MKV file to fix the issue.

As a fluent Spanish speaker who has seen this movie, I can tell you what passes for Spanish in this film is butchered, especially Selena Gomez's Spanish, which required subtitles for me to comprehend anything she was saying in it. I hated the film but I'm pretty sure most fluent Spanish speakers who liked it would need subtitles for this film lol.

Wondering if we'll see this released in 4K in the U.S.

No international releases have English subtitles...

It's with Netflix in the US, so unless Criterion shows interest there's 0 chance this gets a physical release there. And with how much hate this movie is getting outside of critic circles, unless it sweeps the Oscars I don't see Criterion taking a gamble on it.

Even if it implodes elsewhere it's the consensus frontrunner for International Feature (though I'm Still Here's surprise Best Picture nom may complicate things -- barring a tie, one of them will become the first film ever nommed for both Best Picture & Foreign Language/International Feature in the same year NOT to win the latter), Supporting Actress & Original Song. In recent years winning Foreign Language/International Feature has been enough to interest Criterion (Drive My Car, Parasite), get Netflix to authorize a physical release (All Quiet on the Western Front), or even both (Roma). Edit: And Supporting Actress was enough for Netflix to license Marriage Story to Criterion. OTOH, Criterion has already announced Anora so they may not want to go for another Best Picture contender this year.

The hate the movie gets is vastly exaggerated and mostly comes from the US. On SensCritique (the French Letterboxd) it has a rating of 7.0/10 based on 12K reviews. People have every right to hate the film but as usual, a minority of people who are more interested in morals than in cinema makes way more noise than the silent majority.

This kind of movie doesn't really appeal to normies and general audiences (it barely made $10 mil WW, with 8 coming from France), it's mostly for film twitter, reddit and "cinephiles", and the majority of these groups hate it with a passion.

Indeed, sorry, I just checked it out. I wasn't aware about the outcry coming from Mexico. It seems to come mostly from people who haven't even watched the movie though. I imagine if the French had done the same when Moulin Rouge! and Les Miz were released... But then again I haven't watched Emilia Perez yet so I'll see for myself if they have a point here.

As I said, seems to be a case of loud minority vs silent majority. Twitter? Everybody there has a political agenda and knows that negative content engages people a lot more. Can't talk about Reddit, I don't know it well enough. And the movie was released on Netflix in the US with a very limited theatrical release, so not sure if the box office figures are that relevant here. I'm sure that Selena Gomez's name still has some appeal to general audiences.

Funnily enough, it reminds me of the hate that another film starring Selena Gomez received, which is of course the masterpiece Spring Breakers. Usually, when a movie makes people that angry, it can only mean that its director is spot-on.

Anyways, I can't wait to finally watch Emilia Perez. The only thing that surprises me in a bad way coming from Audiard (whose films I love) is the Spanish dialogues but that will probably not bother me that much as I haven't spoken Spanish in 15 years.

It's a wonderful movie, Audiard never disappoint, I don't are about awards, but I wish the movie wins a lot of them, just for those haters. Regarding the 4k, I want to take it, but I wait for the price to drop.
