How is the audio remix on this? Is it listenable, or does it have crappy new foley effects?

It's a Mei Ah licence. They usually do their upmixes with the original sound elements and don't use new effects.

This is apparently because the original squibs they wanted to use froze in the cold weather in Poland.

Anyway, I don't think they look bad at all, Johnnie To's Exiled has very similar looking ones.

Overall this is an outstanding and very overlooked movie in Lam's filmography. The transfer is good but has some minor consistency issues as far as the damage goes (and there is a small tear that shows up for about 15 minutes early in the movie).

I wish a Western label would take it upon themselves to give the transfer the last 15% of additional restoration with some nice extras.

Maybe Eureka could license this one and TOUCH AND GO to go along with their awesome releases of WILD SEARCH and FULL ALERT. I’d snap those up day one.

Seems unlikely as this is part of the infamous Golden Princess catalogue that also includes the Woo films with the current rights holder seemingly unwilling to clear anything for rerelease.

I picked up the Panorama release of TOUCH AND GO, and it looks like I’ll be picking up this Mei Ah release of UNDECLARED WAR. I gotta get BURNING PARADISE and VICTIM too. If only there were decent versions of CITY ON FIRE and FULL CONTACT available.

The Touch and Go transfer is as far as I can remember very good, like I said I wish they had at least done something for the minor defects in the Undeclared War scan. On that note, another excellent underrated Lam flick is The Adventurers, unfortunately the BR transfer there also shows some damage; this is really kind of tragic as Fortune Star then goes and remasters random mediocre comedies that look absolutely spotless.

On the trailer that Fortune Star put out a couple of years ago I think Adventurers was one of the titles that had been remastered in 2K. I suspect with Lam's involvement with this one a new blu ray will probably surface by one of the many labels now releasing HK films.
