Default Watchers II (1990) - Scream Factory

Watchers II Blu-ray

Quote:
The terrifying Watchers saga continues with Watchers II, a tale of genetically altered beasts unleashed upon the world.

A shadowy government agency's sinister experiments have resulted in a pair of unnatural creatures: one is a benign, super-intelligent golden retriever, and the other an inhuman killing machine. Linked by a psychic bond, the dog and the monster escape the watchful eyes of their creators, resulting in a brutal killing spree. Paul Ferguson (Marc Singer, The Beastmaster, V) discovers the dog, and with the help of an animal psychologist (Tracy Scoggins, Babylon 5, The Colbys), they must stop the murderous monster before they become its latest victims.

I'm guessing the original may be one of the 4 upcoming Vestron Video titles and Shout knows this and wanted to tie in?

There are four Vestron titles coming? Was this confirmed recently? Either way, I love the first film especially because of Michael Ironside. Haven't seen 2-4.

We're due at least 4 more, maybe 5 by TripleHBK's count. He's on top of all things Vestron as the thread OP. Personally, and at this point, any further Vestron titles are just icing on the cake for me. If they release Neon City, I don't care if they release musicals going forward

I haven't seen these movies since the VHS days. They're a textbook case of a pretty good underlying idea / story, being made into some cheap, underwhelming potboiler films.

If the first one is a Vestron release, I'll definitely pick it up, because I'm all-in on that product line. This one can be filler for a future B2G1 sale.

P.S. My mom read the book waaay back when, and enjoyed it.

P.S.S. How many of these are there? I know they eventually got to just making it Predator in the woods.

I've honestly been hoping for 'Watchers' from Vestron since the line was announced. But I like part 2 just as much as the first so I've already put an order in for it

I just posted this in the Scream Factory thread as well but I went looking to see how many Watchers films they were and found that there are 4 and all were released by New Concorde. However where things get interesting is that the info I saw had Universal/New Concorde releasing the first film and Artisan (Lionsgate)/New Concorde releasing the 2nd film. Could the thought that Lionsgate still has the original film be wrong? It makes me wonder if a potential announcement for the first film could be around the corner from SF and that if both this sequel and the original sell well we could see an inevitable 3/4 double feature down the road at some point.

Watchers II was an instant buy. Glad there was a thread to SF! I would love Watchers OG, but II was the closest to the book and one i've had on my list forever.

Awesome. Edit: Just saw it's limited. Well there goes that because it would be a while before I would been able to get it.

Artisan released both films in a double feature DVD that I think went away quickly.

I still can't believe that Mark Hamill was the star of part 4. When we rented it back in the '90s I totally thought it would be a VHS cover bait and grab, but he was truly the lead... in probably is worst movie, but still a fun fact.

Mark Hamill (to me) felt like he was constantly searching for himself after Return of the Jedi finished. He has that long gap in time where the roles he was in were oddball genre specific and still seem somewhat surprising to me to this day. Once he found Batman the Animated Series and became The Joker however his career finally (to me) appeared to come back into focus with a more definitive path. It's weird to think that other studios couldn't find a better way to use Luke Skywalker then how they did during that stretch of time.

2-4 are in the Corman library, which Shout owns.

The rights for the original are a little less clear. It opens with the Universal logo, but Artisan released it on DVD. So speculation seems to be it's with LionsGate or Universal.

If it's with Universal than a number of labels could have it, with Vinegar Syndrome being the one who would give us the best release.

I dunno. If it's truly with Universal, I'd kinda like to see Arrow give it a go...

I would think if the original were with Universal, then Shout/Scream would just license it from them, that way they could release the first two together. The fact that this apparently isn't happening leads me to believe it's still with LG. But I've also long since given up trying to figure out rights issues with old Artisan releases, so.

Aren't all the Watchers films owned by New Horizons? Concorde produced all of them.

This is the second Shout Factory site-exclusive limited title with Marc Singer, and Marc Singer makes it an instant purchase for me. Keep 'em coming, SF.

As a huge V fan, I always liked that V's Ham Tyler (Michael Ironside) was in Watchers, and then V's Mike Donovan (Singer) was in Watchers II.

I've had this on laserdisc. I've seen the first two and Watchers II is the better of the two films imo. Never bothered with the DVD as it's pretty much the same thing as the laserdisc. Although I'm not fond of its release being limited, it's great to have even a 2K scan of this. Never would have expected even that at this point.
