Default Hunters (Amazon) - Al Pacino to star

Quote:
Al Pacino Set to Join Jordan Peele's 'The Hunt' at Amazon

Count Al Pacino among the A-list actors making the leap into streaming series.

The Oscar and Emmy winner is nearing a deal to join an Amazon drama called The Hunt from Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions and Sonar Entertainment. It would mark Pacino's first series-regular role.

Created by David Weil, The Hunt follows a band of Nazi hunters in New York City circa 1977. They discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials have made a home in the United States and plan to create a Fourth Reich there, then set out on a bloody mission to stop the plan.

The deal is not yet signed, but when it goes through Pacino will join the previously cast Logan Lerman in the series, which has a 10-episode order from Amazon. Lerman plays a young man whose grandmother is murdered and becomes swept up in The Hunt organization as he tries to find the perpetrator. Pacino will play a veteran Nazi hunter who mentors Lerman's character.

Pacino has won Emmys for HBO's Angels in America and You Don't Know Jack and starred in a couple other projects for the premium service. His only prior credit in an ongoing series was his very first, a guest shot on NYPD in 1968.

Weil will executive produce The Hunt with Nikki Toscano (24: Legacy); the two will serve as co-showrunners. Peele and Monkeypaw's Win Rosenfeld are also executive producers along with Tom Lesinski and Jenna Santoianni for Sonar.

Interesting idea, but the trailer doesn't look appealing at all. I think I'll pass.

I've loved Logan Lerman since "Jack and Bobby". And Al Pacino is one of my favorites, so this will be a must-see for me.

I watched the promo for this series on Amazon Prime and it definitely has me interested. Al Pacino is definitely one of my favorite actors. Can't wait to watch this series.

I'll give it a try. Looks interesting but it is produced by Jordan Peele who also gave us the horrible Twilight Zone reboot.

Just finished the first episode and really enjoyed it. Feels like a sequel to Inglourious Basterds set in 70’s New York. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B084RDGSF7/

I started watching the pilot last night, only got through the first half of the episode before I turned it off because the episode was all over the place. I don't know if it was due to being exhausted but I found myself getting bored with it.

This morning, I went back to finish watching the episode and the back half of the episode was better. But, I didn't like how Al Pacino was relegated to the background. He's an actor that deserves a larger role. I'll get back to watching the rest of the season over the next few days. The series just started off rough with the pilot episode for me because it felt kind of disjointed. But, I'm glad it did pick up. I think they spent too much time on telling Jonah's story and he wasn't exactly a shining pillar of the episode, even on the back half.

I agree the opening was great but the rest of the pilot was fairly dull and kind of a hot mess.

Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot for CBS was also surprisingly bad.

Have watched the first seven eps so far. The tonal swings are jarring and the only one I totally enjoyed was the little vignette about Huntsville, AL (it sort of reminded me of some of the vignettes in The Big Short).

Radnor's character is sort of a constant reminder that the tone is going to shift at some point. I'm not sure if I like it, but it's certainly different.

I thought it was just me. The tone of the series seems to be all over the place. It's like in one episode they'll be going full steam ahead and then they cut to some flashback scene, disrupting the balance in tone that they were trying to set.

Finished it. It is a very weird melange built on the base of an alt-history Nazi hunter story set in the late '70s.

That base is dramatic (if a bit lurid). Then the show runners seemed to decide they wanted to throw in tones, references, and homages to various other films including but not limited to:

Inglorious Basterds & Kill Bill
Schindler's List
The Dirty Dozen
The Boys From Brazil
The Big Short
...and at least one other film that I'm forgetting at the moment.

(I was also reminded of Kick Ass and The Boys at certain points, but those may just be just coincidences of narrative structure and not specific references)

Overall, it's certainly well made and I enjoyed it. But it's definitely not for everyone. The tonal shifts alone will drive many people away. The worst of those are mainly in the first few episodes. After it settles in, the only weird shifts are a couple of little "that shit really happened" vignettes reminiscent of The Big Short and several scenes featuring Radnor's character who basically stands out like a sore thumb as overly-comic relief.
