I am not really a fan of HD, but after hearing of the recent string of good news for the format, I think I will finally buy a bluray player. i figured this would be the place to ask...Can someone please tell me the best $500 player to get. I know nothing about bits bytes and anything technical, so I will have to go with a straight forward recommendation. Just need something for the family to play movies well.

Right now, the PS3 is the best player. It supports most the codecs, it is "future proof" by supporting the latest profiles, and has the most features for its price.
However if you want to wait until summer, there will be new players out then too that will be as good (or close to it) as the PS3 for Blu-ray playback. But most of us own a PS3, and swear by them. It will not let you down as long as you don't mind having no IR port for universal remotes. (The BD-remote is bluetooth only on the PS3). |

SONY BDP-S300. (Notice there is a "P", "S", & "3" in the name.) Little pokey on the load times where DB-Java discs are concerned. Plain vanilla discs load in 30 seconds. Sony has been real good on keeping the firmware up to date for movie compatibility. Solid performer.
May want to d/l the 3.70 firmware while you are waiting on it. Waiting on newer firmware, I can't wait. ![]() |

For a completely different spin and opinion, get the PS3. Quite machine and no load times!
Seems to be a trend going here, hmmmmm. |

I play a ton of games, but the best player is the Panasonic BD30 or the BD50 if you can wait a couple of months. But if you dont care anything about DTS-Master Audio then the PS3 is the best bet.
