Other decade threads are still live, and there's no reason not to keep this train rolling - welcome to the 1940s!
Once again, it seems prudent to implement a weighted system - this time, participants are asked to list their Top 25 of theatrical releases between January 1, 1940 and December 31, 1949. The counting will be as follows: 25 points for the #1 choice, 24 points for the #2 spot, 23 for #3, etc. down the line. The #25 selection will be afforded 2 points, in order to distinguish it from the Honorable Mentions. If you'd like to list some Honorable Mentions past 25 selections, please do so - each title past the 25th will be awarded 1 point. If indicated that there's no particular order, each selection will be awarded 7 points. Don't imagine this will be tallied any time soon, so there's plenty of chances to change titles and lists. Of course, any comments, thoughts, suggestions, questions or any discourse regarding Cinema of the great 1940s or anything else are encouraged and appreciated. As always... thank you to everyone and cheers! Starting off (this order may be subject to change in the coming days): 1. Citizen Kane 2. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp 3. Double Indemnity 4. Casablanca 5. The Grapes of Wrath 6. A Matter of Life and Death (aka Stairway to Heaven) 7. Rope 8. Bicycle Thieves 9. Shadow of a Doubt 10. The Best Years of Our Lives 11. Rome, Open City 12. @ Beckford, appreciate all the Honorables - was pleasantly surprised at how many of those classics I had seen, like Dragonwyck, Stormy Weather, They Made Me a Criminal and perhaps the ultimate Poverty Row picture, Detour.
Very curious to one day see Dragon Seed, it seems polarizing to say the least. Beyond the Forest was hard to find for a long time, need to check that out too. |

As for the 1930s, my knowledge is severely lacking.
But also here I've got a favourite: The Great Dictator (1940: Charlie Chaplin) I think Hynkel's speech is even funnier when you're fluent in German. That said, I totally dig the barber's speech too, which hasn't lost its meaning after all those decades, especially nowadays. |
