Seance on a Wet Afternoon

Rachel Weisz is set star and produce Legendary’s adaptation of acclaimed suspense novel Seance on a Wet Afternoon with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy helmer Tomas Alfredson to direct. Alfredson comes aboard the project replacing Harry Bradbeer, who will remain on as an executive producer as he recently returned to direct Legendary’s Enola Holmes sequel after the success of the first film. BAFTA and Tony-winner Jack Thorne wrote the draft, from a story by himself and Bradbeer.

Based on Mark McShane’s acclaimed 1961 suspense novel of the same name, the story follows a self-proclaimed psychic medium who convinces her husband to kidnap a child so she can help the police solve the crime and achieve renown for her abilities. When her true intentions come to light, however, her husband realizes the plan threatens to consume them both. The novel was previously adapted as a film in 1964 starring Richard Attenborough and Kim Stanley. Stanley was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award, and each earned BAFTA nominations for their performances. [+]

Tomas Alfredson’s anticipated psychodrama “Séance on a Wet Afternoon,” starring Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (“The Favourite”), has been boarded by FilmNation ahead of the Cannes Film Market. Domestic rights are being repped by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance.

Alfredson, who is best known for directing the BAFTA-winning “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and the cult Swedish genre film “Let the Right One In,” said in a statement: “I’m drawn to complex characters, and Jack Thorne’s edge-of-your-seat script blends psychologically deep characters with unnerving twists and turns. With Rachel Weisz at the core of this project, both producing and starring as Myra, the film is sure to be powerful and unnerving. Sounds like another remake we don't need, so as usual, I hope I'm wrong and it turns out to be great.
If anything, one positive aspect of this will be if the excellent 1964 film by Bryan Forbes gets a re-release on blu ray as a result of a new adaptation getting made. Let's hope.

Never knew of or saw the original. The story sounds intriguing to me. Love Weisz too.
