Default Which is a better receiver?

Which receiver is better? Sony STR-DA3300ES or Onkyo TX-SR705. And why. Im looking to purchase one just cant decide on one. I was leaning towards the Onkyo TX-SR705, but since I work at SONY I do get a good discount on the ES receiver. But money isnt a big deal, I just want the better one out of the 2.

The Onkyo is likely to be the better receiver, by far. Sony make some great CE products, but unfortunately receivers aren't one of 'em...

Agreed. Sony makes a decent product, especially the ES line, but I've gotta go with the Onkyo on this one.

I think the Sony takes the cake.

Pick your favorite audio source (preferably music), go to a store, and listen to them.

Ok, this is tough for the Sony ES.... you can find the onkyo in a Circuit City, but you may have to go to a specialized audio store for the sony. (Or try the sony store)

My point is... the most important thing is how it sounds... TO YOU. You can research all you want on features on the internet, but the most important thing should be the sound.

The onkyos in my opinion sound great for movies, but were a bit of a let down for me for music (I currently have a Harmon Kardon). The onkyos however, are the perfect balance of price, sound quality, and feature sets. Almost every sony receiver I've tried out has been huge on the features, but a major let down on sound quality. The ES line is better though. I know someone with a sony ES that does sound good for movies, but I have yet to hear music on it.

Personally, guessing on your price range, I would suggest a Pioneer vsx-92txh that you could find online for $750-$800 if you look hard enough. That will give you great sound and great features.

Or you can be stubborn like me and wait for Harman Kardon to release their new receivers this spring, haha.

Default forget both and get a denon

Sold and owned both sony and onkyo. Now own a Denon and will own nothing else. Sony and Onkyo are easier to set up but Denon is better.

Agree at the level of the 705, always been a Denon lover. However, at the 8XX level and up I would go with the Onkyo. Onkyos at that level and up use D/ACs that you have to go with the Denon4XXX and higher to get. That is a pretty big price gap. Mind you if I was working with a budgget to get one of the Denons that use the better D/ACs and the Rheon video processor, I would go for it.

Well, if others are going to suggest different brands/models, how about the Pioneer Elite's offerings? I've owned receivers from Yamaha, Sony, Denon, Pio Elite...and the Elite has been the best I've had so far.

Spend the slightly bit more for the 805 instead of the 705.
