This has to be April fools, right?
Are VS doing jokes on their site now? I mean, maybe this was one of the last shot of film pornos of the era, but I would've guessed VHS like most were. How is gonna be a 4K? Now, if true... I kind of want it. I do remember this movie well and could replace my VHS rip. 4K porn, what a time to be alive! |

Was this expected to be 4K UHD? I can't remember, but wasn't this teased as a Blu-ray?
Either way, that this is on 4K UHD is awesome news and I have already secured my copy, which I am happy to pay extra for. $24.99 well spent (pun...intended?)! ![]() ![]() |

Was going to preorder this but their specs list this as being in mono. Hopefully that’s a misprint as this movie was released in stereo and the original VHS and Beta tapes were in stereo. The laserdisc was also but it was one title that fell victim to Image’s cutting for time to make one side CAV- the scene with Ron Jeremy is missing on that. There was a poor quality DVD that was in mono. I have emailed VS asking to verify whether or not they got the audio right, will be a shame if that got messed up.

![]() Here is the opening of the movie from laserdisc, preceded by about 2 minutes of promo material which makes it even more baffling that they would have cut the movie for time. You can hear how great the music was in this though, it’ll be a real tragedy if the 4K ends up being in mono. Last edited by 8traxrule; 04-03-2022 at 11:02 AM. Reason: fixed youtube link |

Don't know why they would've bothered to do that. I used to get the "Heard any good movies lately?" listings from Dolby Labs which had a complete list of films released in Dolby Stereo (this was in the early 90s, before any of the digital formats had taken off), and Stiff Competition was on it. That was mainly what made me seek out the movie back then, besides also having seen the trailer on another movie tape I'd rented. I don't know how many porn theaters then were equipped for it, but there were a few other porn films in Dolby, If My Mother Only Knew is another great one from the same director which is available uncut on laserdisc. I Like to Watch is another, but seems that has only ever been available in mono from the original laserdisc to Vinegar Syndrome's recent Blu-Ray, the elements for that may have been lost. The dialogue in Stiff Competition rarely stays centered, but the music in it is great. In fact, a feature I would love to see on any vintage porn film disc is an isolated music track. Many of these movies used production library tracks, I've recognized some of the music in Stiff Competition used in other porn films and videos.

A part of me still feels like old porn should be watched on crappy old transfers. Worn out VHS or over-compressed MPEG or AVI files just feel more right somehow. Forgot this one had a sequel, damn shame that isn't included cuz Julia Ann was smoking in it. |

Did you mention that the tape was stereo? I'm curious if they had any comment on that or not.

I did in my reply, also linked to my YouTube upload (done 12 years ago!) of the laserdisc opening. They did say they mastered the new disc from the original negative and the accompanying sound elements were mono. Not having experience with that I can't comment, but it's a shame in any case. Ironic that we get forced 5.1 or higher remixes of some movies originally released in mono with no option for the original mono tracks, but then in cases like this we get mono when it should be matrixed stereo.
I don't know how to "mux" anything, closest I could do would be run the audio from my VCR to the receiver and the Blu-Ray player video directly to the TV, and try to keep them in sync. The sound could have been mastered better on the tape anyways. (Maybe I should make a DVD from the LD and insert the missing scenes from the VHS or Beta?) Haven't seen the sequel- does it address where the $50,000 prize money comes from? |
