Miramax has a DVD of it out in the states. Please note that it's dubtitled rather than the shockingly excellent English subs on the Japanese version. If you want to find out if you'll like it, pick that up and see before dropping the cash.
As for how it is: It's a Mamoru Oshii movie, aka mindf**ky. The real problem is that Miramax's guy bought the film based on the first 10 minutes(he walked out after the opening, seriously), which are nothing like the subsequent hundred. Miramax then sat on the film for 2-3 years and probably smacked the guy in the head a bunch of times after they realized what they'd bought. I'd say the chances of a domestic Blu release any time soon are essentially nil |

Are you sure?
I have tried 3 online Polish stores which stock Blu-ray and none have any record of it. Note that it always had a Polish track on DVD as it was co-funded by a Polish company. So the presence of a polish track on the Blu-ray doesnt mean this is a Polish release... Can anyone confirm that it is definitely a Polish blu-ray release? |

It's a Japanese film from the get-go
Oshii felt that the environment of Poland is what he wanted for the movie, and since the whole thing was made for about $6 million, they had the script translated into Polish and used local talent So it's a Japanese film, shot in Polish |

Despite the very high price, I bought the Japanese bluray of Avalon, as it's one of my preferate movie. Just watched this yesterday and, having the Memorial Box that was released in Japan in 2001, I must say I was very surprised by the upgrade in picture quality, and also in sound quality (Dolby TrueHD 6.1 of a soundtrack mixed in the Skywalker Ranch by Randy Thom!).
Avalon is very difficult movie to transfer because of the various filters used. Under the supervision of Mamoru Oshii for the Japanese release on DVD in 2001, it was a magnificent and unique movie to watch with this DVD. However the DVD versions released by Studio Canal in Europe and Miramax in US were catastrophic since they were not respecting these specific filters... Now with the added resolution of the bluray, the upgrade in picture quality is very noticeable and makes it, more than ever, an incredible experience. The upgrade with the sound (from DTS-ES to Dolby TrueHD 6.1) is very spectacular. Kenji Kawai made one of the best soundtrack I've ever heard. For fans of the movie, I really recommend buying this bluray, you will not be disappointed. |

This was the movie that got me to buy a multi-region dvd player back in the day - my first import was the NTSC Region 2 DVD of this film!
I have the Blu-ray too - a slight yet satisfying upgrade...not a mega-difference though. |
