The biggest (and the only one that is really relevant) ticket sales website in Brazil, confirmed the 3D release of Transformers One.

Thanks. The Transformers films in theaters have a track record for being in 3D lately, so I believe it if someone says T One will likely also be in 3D. I hope so. Now just a matter of a blu ray 3D to follow for these newer 3D films.

We're getting another TFormers already? RotB must've done better than I thought to make it an annual series.

Hopefully they'll share the success with the conversion studio for stronger 3D, for as good as the space debris scene was in RotB, the missile dodge scene should have been a lot stronger. Especially if we're not going to get blurays and it can only be seen theatrically, which often seems weaker than home 3d.

It's an animated movie, not a live action one

The 3D conversion began. This information came from the confirmation of this IMDB page.

Is this CGI animated movie? Cool! That's the best news I've heard about this theatrical film series in a long time.

------------------
Sometimes animated TV series are best kept animated in my opinion, considering the Transformers films with Shia LeBeoufe and Marky Mark Wahlberg and Rise of the Beasts, seem to repeat the formula of human discovers Transformers, then they have to go search for an item to save the world against the Decepticons. Bumblebee, that was kind of like E.T. but with a Transformer.

Articles about the 3D have started to appear in the press. This bodes well, I think! The mediocre stereo of ROTB was nothing worth showing off, and I can't find any similar corporate PR/demos about its 3D.

Variety: ‘Transformers One’ Drops Eye-Popping 3D Footage at CinemaCon

THR: Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Brian Tyree Henry Debut Origin Story ‘Transformers One’

It sounds like theater owners were the only ones treated with the stereo preview so far:

Quote:
Hemsworth, Johansson and Henry had official duties during Paramount’s studio presentation by pumping a new extended trailer that played for the gathering of theater owners (ahead of a wide launch April 18) as well as pulling back the curtain on the first scene from Transformers One in 3D. Johansson appeared on the big screen in a recorded message from New York, where she’s at work on her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great.

“I’m so incredibly proud of the the work that we’ve all done,” the actress said, teasing that the film is “unlike anything you’ve ever seen onscreen.”

Hemsworth then came out on the Colosseum stage inside Caesars Palace to chat up the film, telling exhibitors that their audiences “will experience something truly spectacular.” He shared that he plays Orion Pax, a young Optimus Prime, and is poised to “reveal a side of this character that audiences haven’t seen before.” He also paid tribute to Canadian actor Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime for decades, for lending his talents by way of “strength, gentleness and compassion.”

The superstar then welcomed his “brother-in-arms” Henry, who is D-16, a young Megatron. He promised an origin story in Transformers One that is “like nothing you’ve ever seen on the big screen before,” adding, “This origin story is how they transformed from brothers in arms to sworn enemies.” The pair revealed the trailer as well as the 3D scene.

By animated, I'm expecting this to look like the live-action Transformers robots and vehicles (but space themed), but without any live-action humans in this film, since it takes place on Cybertron, like the introduction of Bumblebee, which was the best thing about the entire live-action Transformers series so far IMO.

I don’t love the facial animation, but there’s 3DNA all other this. Hope the 3D trailer plays in 3D soon. Would pair well with Garfield next month.

The animation looks good to me. There's less fine detail than I expected, but it's super colorful at least. There's too many unfunny self-aware quips in the trailer though, which gives off a LEGO Movie vibe--not to my taste. With the 3D being a conversion, I'll hold off imagining it's stereo potential.

There are reports that Sony is in conversation with Paramount for a takeover. Not a great perspective for future 3D Blu-ray if Sony owns Paramount, but even a better chance than with Apple or Amazon.

More good news articles are out, this time with the director specifically commenting on the 3D.

https://collider.com/transformers-one-director-dune/

Quote:
INTERVIEWER: I was at CinemaCon and saw the footage in 3D, and it looked great. I'm a big fan of animated movies in 3D because I think that they can be done very well. Is this one of those films where you're gonna recommend to people to see it in 3D?

COOLEY: I gotta say, absolutely. I'm not the first one to want to go out and see a movie in 3D. I do think animated films look fantastic in 3D, but when they first showed me the first footage of this film, the test they had done in 3D, my mind's still blown. It looks so good, and actually makes the storytelling even better, which kind of pissed me off. [Laughs] I was like, “God, it even looks better. Most people aren't gonna see it this way.” But I strongly recommend seeing it in 3D because our world is so detailed. It just makes everything so much more alive as an extra dimension, obviously, but also the scale was so important for this film. Without having humans, you don't have anything to kind of relate the scale of this world to, and so we went the other direction, which is like, “The world is massive.” Dune was a big influence on that. So it was like, “Let's go the opposite direction." The 3D just enhances all of that.

Glad this is receiving a conversion and that Cooley thinks the 3D depth looks good. I'd be a little more excited if he had mentioned something about planning his shots for 3D ahead of time.

Thanks.
Yeah, I agree that this is geared more for a kids audience with the first trailer's style anyway. Maybe the final film will have more depth to the story and characters with less joking overall.

I remember The Last Guardians 3D from Dreamworks showed a trailer with all the little Santa Elves, and it tried to make the movie look like a Minions movie. The reality was, those little Bell Elves were only in about 2% of the whole movie, but it's something how a trailer can distort the actual movie content.

Converted 3D for CGI is unfortunate, with the exception that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3D Live-Action CGI was converted by Prime Focus, who used the 3D assets and created an awesome 3D film with medium to strong 3D especially during the CGI moments. So with the right money spent for the 3D budget, good results are possible.

But I agree, best to go in with lower expectations for the 3D when it's CGI and they converted it instead of rendering it natively. Though double rendering an entire 90 minute film would be costly and time consuming no doubt.

I am going to see this later today but unfortunately I doubt it will be the 3D version.

Edit: I watched it letterboxed in 2D, there are a lot of sequences with fast moving action in environments very well suited to 3D, even with a typically conservative conversion it should look excellent in that format.

As for the film itself, reviews are embargoed but reactions are not so I can say that I enjoyed it a lot more than Rise of the Beasts and found less about it that was objectionable.

I'm going to be 50 years old next year so I am not the target audience but I was for the original toys and animated movie, so I will watch anything Transformers and be satisfied.

How hard is it working the nostalgia angle for the more seasoned crowd? The trailer used a Rolling Stones song that's almost 43 years old, did they stick with the classic rock soundtrack for the film itself?

Do you feel like you'd rewatch it on 3D?

I don't remember any songs being featured in the movie, the score does well enough. It's not a nostalgia fest and there were only a handful of Transformers featured that I recognised from my childhood.

I would definitely rewatch it in 3D and I hope that Turbine can eventually put the film out on 3D Blu-ray because Paramount sure won't.
