Default Steely Dan Repressed

Analogue Productions has announced plans to repress all of the original Steely Dan albums. See here. I know I'm in. What are you thoughts?

I’m good for a few (many have been waiting for their catalog to get a proper repress). I know I'll order Can’t Buy A Thrill and Aja, but those are the only full albums that I really know well. I might get Countdown To Ecstasy or Pretzel Logic too, I dunno. I guess it all depends on my budget at the time of release.

I’m just glad that they’re spacing out the single album releases over 12 months or so. Chad’s recent announcement about his rerelease of the Bill Evans box set has me a little annoyed. I’ve been waiting for audiophile quality releases of several Evans releases, but I don’t need everything on the Riverside label, especially slowed down to 45 rpm so it creates 22 albums, priced at $900, and not available as single releases. Maybe there’s a good reason, but at that price, it’s an easy “pass” from me.

Which Steely Dan releases are you looking forward to?

Unfortunately for me all of them. Since I haven't won the lottery I will have to either limit myself to CBAT, CTE, TRS, and Aja or hope that the 180g Vinyl LPs are close enough to the UHQRs that I can satisfy my Steely Dan jones that way.

Yeah, I'm holding out for a regular 180g release. $150 a pop for "UHQR" vinyl seems a bit excessive, at least for me. Sure it's a nice presentation, but it isn't like previous UHQR releases were free from problems in the past either. While I admire what Chad is trying to do at AP, sometimes it feels like gouging.

It's absolutely ludicrous that so many of Steely Dan's albums have been out of print in vinyl for so long. Becker and Fagen were sticklers on sound production, so their recordings are usually pretty great without a lot of remixing or manipulation unless there's damage to source tapes.

It might take another year before these albums get a more attainable release in quality 180g (Geffen has TBA dates on a couple), but at this point, I'm willing to wait a bit more.

Reviews have been good on the Geffen release of CBAT. $25.49 and free shipping from Amazon was all it took for me to bite. It will be here Tuesday.

great and genuinely original band

I will see if I have a few (more than a few) cents to spare because I need an education on steely dan. I know that I always liked them a lot but Im no expert so this seems an opportunity to fill my lack of knowledge
