Monster Rancher was designed to read CDs if I recall correctly since it was designed for a PSOne. I believe if you give it something besides a CD, you are likely to get repeats of the same monster since the game goes into a "default" read when it gets something odd such as a DVD or Blu-ray that it can't read like a CD (I think it reads something unique to CDs such as the tracks, so DVDs/blu-rays have a different file system).
