Default The Holy Mountain (1926)

Despite the information on Amazon's product page, this is not for the 1973 Alejandro Jodorowsky film.

I just saw the trailer of this, and it seems among the most disturbing things I've ever seen!

(edit: was referring to the 1973 movie)

You're kidding. I just blind-bought and watched this at the beginning of the year.

I'll probably buy it again if KL delivers a better transfer. It's a heck of a film.

EDIT:
No wait, I'm thinking of the '73 one, not the '26 film.

Kino is delivering the German movie from 1926; NOT the Jodorowsky's film.

Yeah, looks to be the 1926 one, which is on Kino's site:

It may be the 1926 film and Amazon has the wrong info. Kino once released the 1926 film on DVD, and the Blu of Jodorowsky's is still in print from Abkco.

So how is the 1926 film? Worth a blind-buy?

I placed an order already thinking it was the '73 film, but if it's good I might as well keep my preorder, lol.

I haven't seen it, but here's the description from Kino's website.

Quote:
A strange and beguiling romance that launched the career of Leni Riefenstahl, The Holy Mountain is the greatest of Arnold Fanck's legendary "mountain films," in which dramatic intrigues are played out against the breathtaking backdrop of the German Alps.

Enthralled by the scenic majesty and heaving power of nature, an alluring dancer (Riefenstahl) seeks the man of her dreams in a small mountain village. There she encounters a reclusive climber (Louis Trenker) and a young skier (Ernst Petersen), who are each pursuing their own elusive ideals amid the intoxicating beauty and treacherous dangers of the Alps.

Riefenstahl, who would later direct the controversial Triumph of the Will and Olympia, no doubt acquired her fascination with the bermensch while working on this lofty mortality tale, and developed an eye for the striking compositions for which she would later become famous.

The Holy Mountain is a pretty beautiful movie. It's all about mountain-climbing in the Alps and you get to see what people wore back in those times for mountain-climbing and you get some massively impressive on-location shots of these mountains and the people actually climbing them. I found it really thrilling.

I also appreciate the movie from a historical perspective. Riefenstahl is most famous for Triumph of the Will and the other propaganda films she made for the Nazi regime. This movie, in contrast, shows her craft as a filmmaker in a context that's not tarnished by politics and history. It makes you wonder what could have been with her career if the political environment in the 30's and 40's had been different.
