Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place Part II and Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy is embarking on his next project with the feature adaptation of Claire Keegan’s acclaimed novel Small Things Like These. Murphy will star in and produce the film that’s been greenlighted by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity which will finance the project. Principal photography is underway in Ireland.

Ciaran Hinds and Emily Watson are also starring in the drama whose source material has been likened to a Dickens tale. The story takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers the startling secrets being kept by the convent in his town, and some shocking truths about his own life, as well. source

This was a well acted film that just didn't hit home for me. I'm not sure if it's the script or director. The film felt like it was meandering through the first half.

Quietly masterful, I think this might be my favourite Cillian performance, he doesn't say much but he doesn't need to.

His face and expressions and those eyes say it all.

The script and direction is superb, it won't be everyone's cup of tea, possibly too quiet. Murphy's performance reminded me of Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor.

A performance again, that not everyone will get or appreciate, because it is so quiet, although again the eyes and the expressions are where the performance lies.

Anyway I digress, I'd much rather watch Cillian here than in his Oscar winning performance, I'm not likely to watch Oppenheimer again, Small Things Like These I'll return to again and again.

Emily Watson is terrifying in the real sense of the word.

Although don't expect fireworks or a big obvious resolution, this subject has been approached by other film makers and although the poor unfortunate girls of the infamous Magdalene Laundries are an important aspect.

This is more about one man's inner battle to do the right thing shaped by his past.

One man's meandering is another man's quiet reflection.

Murphy was excellent in this. I’m not usually a fan of quiet performances, dealing with facial expressions and such but he was outstanding. It’s a short movie and that’s all it needed to be. I’ll see this a second time.

Really weird that they haven't released anything for this movie here. Not even a DVD or one of those overpriced store exclusives.
