What is your opinion on the recent trend of creating black & white versions of color movies? Such as The Mist, Parasite, Fury Road, Nightmare Alley, etc.
Personally there’s only one where I actually prefer the black and white version, and that’s Nightmare Alley. Some are pretty good like The Mist while others lose something, like Fury Road. Parasite I prefer in color as well. GDT said it took longer to grade the B&W version of Nightmare Alley than the color version, and judging from the results, he's probably not exaggerating. I also checked some of my movies to get a look at what they might look like in black and white (doing it the simple way of turning down saturation to 0), and there was one where I actually really liked it: No Country for Old Men The framing of the shots and the use of shadows really stands out. Some standout scenes include the body by the tree, the border scenes entering Mexico, and pretty much all of the last 20 minutes. If I could snap my fingers and get an official version of a random movie that is properly graded for black and white it would be No Country for Old Men. |
