Default Hellsing: Ultimate Collections

I'm curious as to peoples thoughts on how these look and sound.
I heard that FUNimation wasn't that good with releases on Blu-Ray and am concerned about the quality on these.

I don't trust "Professional" Reviewers anymore and I'd like to know from the End Users.

Thanks in advance.

While I haven't upgraded my Geneon DVD Steelbooks of the series(which was only the 1st 4 episodes). I did happen to watch the Toonami Broadcast of the series in HD and I thought it looked and sounded amazing.

Yeah, but that is a Broadcast, not the Source.

Bitrate of the blus is ~26 to 31 Mbps. The first 4 eps look a tad rougher than the last 6 since they were done with older CG (but I think they cleaned them up a bit for the blus).

Yeah, I know people will probably nitpick about DNR, banding, digital noise, etc. None of those really stand out in most anime titles I see, unless it's a blatant upscale.

I remember Hellsing Ultimate looking pretty clean, clear, and good overall. Parts of it might look soft and hazy, so it's not quite as great as anything like FMA: Brotherhood, but it's far from terrible.

Its generally pretty good. Some of the early episodes look a tad rough because they were made in the early era of HD anime.

And then some of the latter episodes were made by different studios I think? So there's some unevenness there.

But the Blu-rays are certainly the best they can possibly look.

Disc 4 (second disc of Part 2). Note that FUNimation for whatever reason licensed only the first episode of The Dawn: A Supplementary of Hellsing, you'll have to sail the high seas for episodes 2 and 3.

Or import from Germany since they're the only country who licensed all of it.

Did they also license Digest for Freaks? Geneon nor FUNimation licensed that. Another thing on the high seas.

There was an ANNcast back in the day with some of Funi's marketing people and one of the twitter questions was about the rest of The Dawn. They didn't even know it was on the disc. Good old Funimation.

Justin Rojas, Lance Heiskell, and Adam Sheehan were the ones that appeared on FUNimation ANNCasts, it would only be one or two of the above.

Speaking of which, I miss the days of when you knew who were at these companies and there was fan interaction with companies. Now just soulless corporations, the last bastions of the fan interaction are Media Blasters, AnimEigo, Discotek Media, and to an extent, Sentai Filmworks. It's even worse for say the UK, Crunchyroll UK (formerly FUNimation UK, Manga UK) is run out of the US. The UK offices were shut down, and everyone was laid off, so there is zero communication, none to speak of whatsoever.

I remember when FUNimation was very fan friendly. One of my DBZ steelbooks was bought used for me as a gift, and didn’t come with an insert. All I had to do was email them and they sent me one. They also used to have live Q&As every few months. Charlene Ingram tried bringing that model to Viz when she left, but it didn’t last.

Wait, seriously? So does this mean 2 and 3 were never dubbed in English?

If so, then I've lost all interest becasue I don't care about Hellsing in Japanese.

Nope, also the one episode FUNimation did get wasn't dubbed into English anyway.

There was 2 of them on that ANNcast that mentioned Hellsing. I'm pretty sure it was Lance and Adam. I brought it up because sometimes Funimation was like the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing and it just seemed to get worse as they got bigger. Justin Rojas was pretty good at fan interaction but he left just as Funi was changing.

This. There was plenty to be critical about Funimation, but in the early days they won a lot of goodwill (from me for sure) because they actually seemed to listen to fans. As they went along though they started to drift away from that and now like BOA alluded to its just corporate doublespeak. Don't we all feel like we're "winning"?

So they basically pulled the same shit they did with Ghost in the Shell Arise by not including the story that leads directly into the movie? Cute Funimation, real cute. No wonder they got bought out by Crunchyroll.
