That
[Show spoiler]sad, but somehow optimistic, ending
had me in tears when I watched this as a 9 year old late on a Friday night

It was on a horror double bill with something...

I also cried when
[Show spoiler]Gwangi dies in the church surrounded by fire
at the end of the film.

Be nice if they could get the Jack Arnold interview from the German Koch Universal scifi Blurays.

This has been on my wishlist for years now, so I'm very happy Arrow got it. I requested it ages ago, in fact, but never heard anything back. Nice to see surprises like this popping up every now and then!

I think I actually have a DVD of it somewhere but haven't watched it in years...maybe even a decade! My mum introduced it to me, and I've loved it since then. Great special effects, love the general tone of this film. Visually, I bet it still holds up!

Arrow have announced at least one blinder a month in their recent announcements. I can't really see how they can top One-Eyed Jacks, Pulse, Ronin, The Day of the Jackal, The Thing, or The Incredible Shrinking Man for their December lineup! In fact, they probably deserve a month off...

You got to be kidding. I just got this movie.

I coveted it after running the community sci-fi poll, since it looked classy and inventive and had so many votes. So I put the DVD on my wishlist. A total blind-buy, but my sci-fi fandom demanded it. My mother ordered it as a Birthday present. I watched and loved it. But I would have held out for the Blu-Ray if I knew it was coming--I didn't expect this kind of release at all.

Whether it comes to the US or not, I'm definitely upgrading my copy.

Yep. I really gotta get myself a region-free player. The supplements list the edited-down Super 8 version of the film (which I owned as a kid). Yep. Gotta have it!

Massively DNR'd, removing fine detail. Not much better than DVD and the transfer is not good anough for Arrow to release.

I wouldn't say the german blu-ray is THAT bad... though it could use a good improvement like a new scan of the negative.

It is an improvement on the dvd release.. but it might be when it's in motion that there is something "off".

Universal has zero history of remastering a title and letting a company outside the US release it. There is virtually no chance this will be a new scan.

I'd expect the same transfer, with a better encode.
If the DNR is baked in, nothing Arrow can do about it.

I have the German Blu and while not dazzling, it's better than the DVD.
Love to see a vastly improved release but not holding my breath on Arrow's.

ok thanks . so Arrow is using the same scan ? I hope not but from others said not likely . And as for the better encode , we found out that meant nothing with the marx brothers set . I would have been fine alone with the Universal set then double dipping for the Arrow just for a book . Kinda ugly with the yellow spines as well ...

For "shrinking man" I will have to wait till it actually comes out and see the reviews then. The pre-order price is nuts anyway for £25 . Arrow stuff is normally about under £14 over at amazon uk .

It's not very good and works only as a temporary solution until a good disc of it arrives.
But compared to some of the other German releases of Universal sci fi its not too bad.

The French release might be better. Their disc of This Island Earth does at least look like HD unlike either of the German discs

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but do Arrow's The Burbs (new scan from IP) and upcoming The Thing (new scan from OCN) not count?

It's only £17.99 pre-order from Arrow themselves; and yes, they ship worldwide. Link at top of Page 1.
