Ex-mercenary Nick Escalante isn’t a violent man by nature. He’s just good at it. And when things get very, very bad, he’s naturally at his best. Las Vegas is the backdrop for all the torrid action of Heat, as screen legend Burt Reynolds (Hustle, Stick) plays the softhearted bodyguard who’s out to protect his friends. When a gangster’s son brutally beats an old flame, it ignites a tightly wound thriller that pits Burt against the mob and culminates in a vicious cat-and-mouse climax. Written by Hollywood’s master craftsman, William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, Misery), directed by Dick Richards (Farewell, My Lovely) and co-starring Karen Young (Criminal Law), Peter MacNicol (Ghostbusters II), Neill Barry (O.C. and Stiggs), Howard Hesseman (Honky Tonk Freeway) and Diana Scarwid (Inside Moves).

Not the Heat you need but the one you deserve.

Not a bad film, but it definitely had a multitude of production issues including Burt Reynolds punching one of the four directors that were attached to this movie. This was later remade as the Jason Statham film Wild Card in 2015.

So, I watched "Heat" last night. I've seen "Heat" before via streaming but it's been 2 or 3 years since I've seen it and this was my first time watching the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release. The review on "Heat" is up on this site and I can't help but notice that the video received 2 out of 5 stars in the review. I personally didn't see any real issue with the video transfer and thought it looked fine. So, I have no idea where the 2 stars is really coming from.

Also, "Heat" is a pretty underrated movie. Legitimately, they managed to make a quality movie here despite all of the apparent chaos during the production, including going through multiple directors. There's some stuff that's probably not quite as good as it should be and the fight scene in the penthouse mid-way through the movie is a little awkward (as is Burt's outfit there) but it's still a quality movie. With a little tweaking, this could have actually been a great movie because the foundational elements were there.

I found both the storylines that are running during this movie - i.e.
[Show spoiler]Nick (Burt) helping Holly get revenge against DeMarco and then Nick's subsequent battle DeMarco in the 2nd half of the movie to be compelling as well as the story of Nick serving as an older mentor to the young, inexperienced, naive Cyrus (Peter MacNicol)
- to be excellent . Burt and Peter MacNicol, IMO, both put in excellent performances here and I think Neill Barry as DeMarco was pretty good too. This movie really is underrated.
