Default Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)

Quote:
Just last December, producer Frank Marshall seemed to hint at developing a new Indiana Jones film at Lucasfilm's new studio home at Disney when he posted to Twitter, "A bit strange sitting in the Indiana Jones office in the Lucasfilm office on the Disney lot, but I'm sure I'll get used to it." It was pure speculation, but since Disney snagged the rights to the iconic adventure franchise the previous week, and Harrison Ford said another film following Dr. Jones wasn't out of the question, it didn't seem out of the ordinary. But a new rumor seems to indicate that Disney wants to take the character in a different direction. Read on!

Latino Review, who has a pretty solid track record with big blockbuster rumors, reports that Disney might be looking to reboot Indiana Jones and turn it into a franchise that could switch out actors indefinitely like the long-running James Bond series. In addition, the actor at the top of their list is none other than Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper, though the source says there are other names on the list below their top choice. But this doesn't mean that Harrison Ford couldn't still play Indiana Jones in another sequel, but the studio is aware that his age may start to preclude him from going on.

Initially, the thought of rebooting Indiana Jones seems sacrilegious, but compared to the progress of the Indiana Jones franchise, it makes sense. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas created Indiana Jones as a tribute to old adventure serials, so it would almost go against the hero's existence to limit him to a series of four films. Plus, Indiana Jones came about because Spielberg was itching to direct a James Bond film, so Lucas gave the filmmaker his own action adventure hero instead. And at the end of the day, a reboot can't be worse than Indiana Jones an the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

As of now, the studio reportedly has a date in mind that Indiana Jones 5 would have to meet. Otherwise they will move forward with a plan for a younger actor to step into the role, and Frank Darabont might be involved with a story for that (hopefully they don't throw his script out like they did with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull). While I'm worried that the abysmal fourth entry in the series might be Harrison Ford's last movie as Indiana Jones, I'm not sure a fifth film could help matters any. Maybe what Indiana Jones really needs is this James Bond style reboot. Thoughts?

This sort of nonsense doesn't deserve its own thread.

I think this is a bad idea. Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones and he has been for over 30 years. This isn't like Bond where Connery made five films in as many years and got burnt out and quit when his contract ran out. Also, Bond is vague enough that he can be played in many way by different actors. Indiana Jones IS Harrison Ford and vice versa. I literally can not see anyone else in that role.

Bradley Cooper can pull it off and it was time for Ford to pass the torch anyway so I'm cool with this.

Yeah, my first though was also "OH DEAR GOD NO!!!"

But then, in the context of the James Bond franchise, I'd be willing to give a rebooted Indy a chance if it's the same calibur of filmmaking as Casino Royale was. It's one of those things we'd have to wait and see how it plays out.

Is this news prepping fans for the disappointment that the original Star Wars cast won't be back?

If Ford isn't playing Indy then it's time to let it die. KotCS was bad enough. Ford is too old at this point. Indy was a character of his time period. With Bond they kept him current to the times. I just don't see how they can keep Indy locked in the 1930s through 1950s without rehashing what they have already done and I don't see Indy working as a modernized character like Bond has been.

I still can't believe they replaced Lewis G Wilson as Batman. He was the first, after all.

Seriously, reboot Indy. I want more Indiana Jones adventures, and I think Ford is too old to play him. I want an "in his prime" Indiana Jones, not one with an AARP card collecting Social Security.

The difference with Batman, Bond, or Superman is that these characters existed in comic books and novels before any film version existed, so you can always go back to the source material for new inspiration on how to portray different aspects of those characters. With Indiana Jones, he was created for the big screen and I really can't see anyone else playing this character except Ford. Indy is a singular experience from a character point of view. It just seems wrong to even think of anyone except Ford playing this character. Sometimes it's nice to just let it lie as is. I wouldn't mind another Indy film with Ford, but without Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas it wouldn't work.

Number 1 its not like the 4 movies with Ford would not never exist, we always have those to fall back on. The bigger issue lies in the fact that whoever does Indy out of the gate is going to be compared to Ford day in and day out. The Director is going to be compared to Spielberg day in and day out.

If this is done as you say it needs to be done right. A few years ago had this been suggested I would have recommended Hugh Jackman for it. He can pull off the guys guy stubble look with no issues. Bradley Cooper had it in the A team at one point and I just didnt buy it. I just cannot take him serious in that type of role, Indy worked on many levels because of the light heartedness around Fords rugged deminor. I am not sure who i would recommend to play Indy right now, I definitely think it should be an unknown with the right script and the right tone. Make it campy and its a ripoff, make it to serious and its not Indy.

Certainly has to be better than Temple of Doom. But I still bet we'll get a direct sequel before a reboot.
