This is an interesting one, as the photography seems muddy to begin with. Is 4k going to shine here? Curious to find out.

Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography I believe will translate beautifully to 4K.

Unless there's massive improvement in the encoding department I'll stick with the Bluray which is also from (likely same) 4K master. Hard to justify without the main selling point of HDR allowing the presentation to breath a bit better.

The negative was purposely flashed (momentarily exposing it to light) in order to gain an authenticity of period.

This is what I believe the OP meant by muddy, a similar effect was attempted on Day of the Locust with a more gauzy result which was far less effective.

**interesting to see how the new Arrow 2K scan will look as the Imprint blu ray looks akin to a VHS**

No HDR is disappointing but still wonderful news.

Fun Fact: Kubrick was so impressed by the cinematography from this film, he reportedly called Altman to question him how he did it.

Great news but Criterion could have done a better cover....a movie called McCabe & Mrs. Miller and all you get is McCabe?

Awesome news. Maybe they can get their hands on The Long Goodbye for a 4K as well. Apparently the remaster Kino released is way off on color timing.

A brilliant, unique Western.

It's my most-watched Altman film, along with Nashville. That one needs a 4K UHD too.

What does Criterion have against HDR? So frustrating that they so often release their 4K movies without one of the primary benefits of the format.

Not everything needs HDR. The Others doesn’t have it and it’s absolutely perfect the way it is. This probably wouldn’t benefit much from hdr either.

I am also curious how this will look.

I 100% agree with the "muddy" description. I only ever popped in the bluray 1 time and made it 30 minutes in. That is literally all I remember about it.. the hazy, murky, muddy vibe of it. From the literal mud of the roadways, paths and dirt floors to damp forests to the strange cinematography.

I will buy this and compare for myself. Happy to have Altman on 4KUHD.
