We have learned that George Tillman Jr is set to direct a biopic focused on boxing legend George Foreman.

George Tillman Jr has previously directed episodes of ‘This Is Us’ and ‘Luke Cage’ as well as movies such as ‘Soul Food’, ‘Men of Honor’, ‘Notorious’, ‘Faster’, ‘The Longest Ride’ and ‘The Hate U Give’. Tillman Jr has also produced all ‘Barbershop’ films including ‘Barbershop’, ‘Barbershop 2: Back in Business’ and ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’ as well as serving as executive producing Dee Rees’ ‘Mudbound’ for Netflix.

David Zelon will produce the film through his Mandalay Pictures production company, they have recently produced Pentrice Penny’s ‘Uncorked’, Edson Oda’s ‘Nine Days’, Clark Johnson’s ‘Juanita’ and Jonathan Helpert’s ‘IO’ starring Anthony Mackie and Margaret Qualley.

George Edward Foreman was born in January 10, 1949 who is an American former professional boxer that competed between 1969 and 1997. Nicknamed “Big George”, he is a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist.

The iconic George Foreman Grill is promoted and named by former boxing champion George Foreman. It is a portable electrically heated grill manufactured by Spectrum Brands. Since its introduction in 1994, over 100 million George Foreman grills have been sold worldwide.

Production is eyed to begin later this year.

Nice. I just hope they don’t overlook the process that went into naming his sons.

Wonder if he made more money selling the grill or during his boxing career. I remember when he fought Evander Holyfield. Not once did George ever sat down when it was time to return to his corner. It went the distance and Evander won

He made way more from the grill. Well over $200 million.

It's so simple, but the name "The George Foreman Grill" is iconic. Would any other name have worked? I had one at some point.

The movie could be something. I am generally not a fan of biopics, but this could draw some interest.

The full title of this movie is, and I am not joking,
"Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World"

I liked the boxing parts but the other stuff was a drag, especially after he stops the first time. The big fight was so short. When it ended, I was like "That's it?" The parts showing the mistreatment he got as a kid/young adult were nicely done. The religious stuff was done better in Father Stu.

It is truly astonishing how such a remarkable life story could be turned into a story that is so dramatically inert. Is George Tillman Jr. an android by any chance? Because he doesn't seem to have any understanding whatsoever what the emotiional beats of Foreman's life story are. It just ticks off the big moments in the most flat, robotic, way possible.

This was actually a lot better than I thought it was going to be; I definitely went in with lowered expectations, given the tepid reviews.

The worst thing you can say about the movie is that the story feels awfully familiar, generally speaking, as it's been done to death in films like Rocky. On the other hand, this is definitely a true-life story, and the fact that Foreman was able to stage such an against-all-odds comeback later in his career is the kind of twist that would have been a bit too much in a fictional film.

The period detail and production design were pretty good, although there was a bit of sloppiness in the filming in things like camera reflections, etc. We forget how good most filmmakers are these days in getting rid of those, either through smart camera placement or just thanks to digital effects.

I just saw this and thought it was great.

One of the greatest comebacks in history.

I remember when this happened and everyone knew what a remarkable achievement it was.

I liked it. Simple and effective. The guy who played Ali may not have Ali's voice but got his beats down well. They should have shown more of George's famous wisdom.

Big George Foreman Blu-ray (brief user review)

Big George Foreman is a Christian movie that is based on a true story (Rated PG-13 for “Some sports violence”). Big George Foreman had an estimated budget of $32 million dollars and box office sales of only a little over $6 million dollars. Therefore, this Christian movie was a huge financial flop at the box office and lost several millions of dollars. Overall, I thought the movie was a very good movie, and this movie was released on April 28th 2023 in theaters (so one cannot blame COVID for the movies bad performance at the box office). Sony’s faith based Christian division called Affrim films is the studio that made this movie. If Christian and faith-based movies continue to lose money at the box office, one day there might not be any more of these movies since an executive at the studio would be forced to put a pause on such movies being made. Big George Foreman was released on the Blu-ray format on 6-27-2023, and hopefully some of those box office losses can be made up on home video. Some websites claim box office sales were below $6 million dollars.

The following contains some spoilers, so do not read unless one has first seen the movie

This movie is based on a true story. George Foreman had a very tough life growing up between the ages of a baby to the time he reached 19 years old. George Foreman lived in poverty for around the first two decades of his life. George Foreman when he was a kid, at dinner instead of being fed an entire hamburger, that hamburger had to be cut into four separate pieces among his brothers and sisters he grew up with. When George Foreman went to public school, he was so poor that his toes were sticking out of his worn-out shoes. Also, George Foreman was so poor that each day during lunch at the public school he attended, he had to watch the other kids eat their food, since George Foreman’s family could not afford to pack him a lunch. All this can be seen in the movie that is based on a true story.

George Foreman growing up had deep anger, and either no faith in God, or very weak faith in God while growing up. The movie shows George Foreman when becoming a young man, making the wrong decision to almost rob someone on the street (a undercover cop). George Foreman learned his lesson after almost being caught by the police. Around the age of 19 George Foreman became a boxer. George Foreman won the gold metal in the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. At a certain point in George Foreman’s life, he claims to have experienced a near death experience that changed his life. Many people that die or have near death experiences claim that they experienced nothing. It is weird that only some people claim to have experienced a near death experience where they meet Jesus. The movie does not explain what happen during this so-called near-death experience in terms of the supernatural, however what ever happen to George Foreman during that experience it changed his life. George Foreman woke up from almost being dead and talking about Jesus Christ. George Foreman gave up his very successful boxing career and devoted his entire life to Jesus Christ and became a Preacher/Reverand that preached from the Pulpit. George Foreman started being very faithful to his wife after getting saved and confessing his sins to certain people he felt he wronged. The movie showing him asking for forgiveness from certain people. George Foreman felt led of the Lord to open a George Foreman Youth Center for the community. This was to help the youth find Jesus Christ and help the youth stay away from crime. At one point in the movie George Foreman who use to be the world champion of boxing around 20 years ago, decides to return to the boxing ring after running into financial problems. At the amazing age of 45 George Foreman becomes the oldest boxer in world history to win the world championship (George Foreman wife claims to have had a vision from God that her husband would become a world champion once again). Therefore, George Foreman is able to pull himself out of poverty once again.

It is very sad but many athletes, singers, and professional movie stars in the 20th Century have been robbed by the person that was put in charge of their several millions of dollars that they earned when becoming famous. Sometimes it’s the financial advisor stealing all the money, however in George Foreman’s case the movie shows the guy in charge of Foreman’s money, losing all Foreman’s money in the stock market on very bad risky investments (with only $2,000 left in Foreman’s savings account instead of several millions). At the age of 45 its good that George Foreman was able to get back in the ring and make several millions of dollars once again for his family and the youth community center. He would have been broke and in poverty once again if he would not have been able to get back in the boxing ring. Athletes, singers, and professional movie stars that hire a so called professional financial advisers need to ask those advisers to give them a valid statement of their net worth once every 3 months minimum, since so many famous people end up losing all or most of their money since some famous people are so busy on stage performing and traveling that they have not looked at a valid statement of their net worth for over a year.

While sometimes there exists good financial advisers that make logical and smart decisions with a client’s money. Many athletes, singers, and professional movie stars that become famous would be better off many times keeping their money out of the stock market and instead firing the person in charge of all their finances. Sometimes good real estate investments with hard assets are better then investing in the stock market. Many billionaires and multi-millionaires that manage their own money in the United States in the past would place $250,000 amounts into several different FDIC insured accounts in various banks by the United States government (FDIC insurance is for the rare case that a bank fails). In modern times many billionaires, multi-millionaires, and other people place all or most of their money in Treasury bills from their brokerage or directly from the Treasury using websites like Treasury Direct. The advantage of purchasing Treasury Bills directly from a website like Treasury Direct, is that it is much safer than a bank that is FDIC insured. Since even if all the FDIC banks were to fail one day, the US Treasury Bills are much safer than any bank with FDIC insurance. Each US Treasury Bill can be purchased for as low as $100 or as high as $10 million dollars per bill. Also, many billionaires and multi-millionaires like to buy several $10 million dollar Treasury Bills and some people place billions of dollars into Treasury Bills since they are much safer than FDIC insurance, and the Treasury Bills would only fail if there was some major rare event like World War III where the government no longer exists anymore. Many experts also recommend that people place a minimum of 10% to 15% of their money into metals like gold, just in case some of the world currencies collapses to the value of zero, then one would not be completely broke if they own some gold and silver.

Therefore, it is easy for athletes, singers, and professional movie stars to manage their own money by placing all or most of their assets in Treasury Bills that earn around 5% and one does not need to rely on another human being that might steal one’s money or place it in very bad stock market investments. I am getting tired of seeing so many true story movies where famous people go broke, its time for famous people to spend 30 minutes once a month to manage their own money. The only thing safer than Treasury Direct is owning physical gold in a bank vault, etc. Singers and other people on the road touring constantly can login to Treasury Direct when they want to transfer money in or out of the Treasury Bills.

Video Comments

Big George Foreman did not receive a 4K Blu-ray release, and instead only received a 2K Blu-ray release. A total of 35.7GB of space out of 50GB is used on the dual layer Blu-ray disc. This 2K Blu-ray disc uses the MPEG-4/AVC codec with 1080P resolution. For some scenes in the movie the average MPEG-4/AVC bit rate appeared to be around 25Mbps. Overall, I was happy with the color quality and overall image of this standard 2K Blu-ray release. This movie is encoded with several different language subtitle options for people the need or want subtitles.

Audio Comments

Big George Foreman contains both a lossless English and Spanish 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack that is bit for bit exactly the same as the studio master. Also, for the visually impaired a lossy English 5.1 Dolby Digital 640kbps English Audio Descriptive Service soundtrack is offered. Listening to the English 5.1 DTS-HD Master soundtrack, it sounded very good with easy to understand voices coming out of the center channel, nice surround speakers sound, active subwoofer, and nice front left and right sound mix. However, in the movie theaters this movie was shown with Dolby Atmos, therefore the studio should have placed the 13.1 Dolby Atmos soundtrack on the Blu-ray but instead only 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack.

Extra Features

The main disc menu is in 5.1 LPCM with 1080P using the MPEG-4/AVC codec. Sony still places the extra features preview windows on the main disc menu instead of having a dedicated extra features menu. Also, Sony still automatically starts having the extra features play as soon as the movie is over when many people instead prefer to manually launch the extra features. 100% of the extra features use the MPEG-4/AVC codec at 1080P quality. Also, all the extra features are in 2.0 Dolby Digital at 192kbps, except for some of the preview trailers that are in 5.1 Dolby Digital at 640kbps (some trailers in 2.0 Dolby Digital at 192kbps). Big George Foreman: A Look At the Message & The Making of the Film lasts 11 minutes and 16 seconds. Toe To Toe: Foreman & Ali lasts 3 minutes and 31 seconds. Deleted Scenes lasts 18 minutes and 45 seconds. Gag Reel lasts 1 minute and 14 seconds. Preview trailers lasts 8 minutes and 19 seconds.

Conclusion

Big George Foreman is an interesting Christian movie about the life of George Foreman and how he changed after dedicating his life to Jesus Christ and becoming a Preacher/Reverand. In the ideal world this movie should have received a native 4K Blu-ray release with 13.1 Dolby Atmos, however instead this movie only received a 2K Blu-ray release with 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio. For a standard 2K Blu-ray release this movie had good MPEG-4/AVC video with nice 5.1 lossless audio. The special features (extras) were enjoyable to watch. This Big George Foreman Blu-ray is recommended for both boxing fans and Christians that are interested in the true story of George Foreman’s life.

This was just a brief user review, Martin Liebman wrote a professional review for this movie at the following link
