Quote:
A THOUSAND AND ONE follows unapologetic and free-spirited Inez (Teyana Taylor), who kidnaps her six-year-old son Terry from the foster care system. Holding onto their secret and each other, mother and son set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity, and stability, in a rapidly changing New York City.

Favorite movie of the year so far. Focus Features should have waited until Fall to realease this because….

Teyana Taylor gives a world class, raw and beautiful performance as a young mother who wants nothing best for her son and will do anything for him. There are so many layers to this story and she navigates through them so expertly.

The film itself is a unique story and flows well. Everything major happens in the last fifteen minutes and it ends abruptly, but given the characters history, this feels so fitting and leaves you lost like Terry at many points throughout the film.

See this film if you have the chance, it’s worth every minute of your time.

I agree it's one of the best movies of the year and a Fall release might have boosted the chances of nominations. And of course it will be a shame if Taylor's performance is forgotten by the end of the year.

A rather depressing movie. While the film was well acted it couldn't keep me interested. It felt like it went on for a thousand and one minutes and then the ending was rather disappointing. I felt sorry for Terry and thought all the actors that portrayed him did an excellent job. Taylor did a good job but nothing Oscar worthy IMO. Of course it wasn't any worse than Yeoh's or Curtis' performances and they both won the Oscar.

I had a page open to buy tickets for this yesterday on the Regal website but when I got back to it and tried to go to the payment page I kept getting an error. When I checked the showtimes it turns out that the showing I was trying to buy had been cancelled. Never seen that happen before.

I haven't had that happen before but it's been awhile since I bought tickets online. There are self serve kiosks at the Regal I go to which I use when I'm not getting concessions. I see that A Thousand and One is down to one showing a day now where I saw it so you better hurry before this one disappears.

Fantastic film. Don't listen to those who say it's 'depressing'. It's a film. It won't lull you into weeks of depression.

Teyana Taylor is spellbinding.

Agreed all around. It's definitely a movie that veers into unhappy/tragic territories but it ultimately ends with hope all around. Between this and "Of an Age", Focus has really been on a kick this year and hope the same applies to "Polite Society" and "Asteroid City".

Good film but not something I’d want to rewatch.

Blind bought the DVD for $15 at Walmart today. Hoping the film’s decent at least; I’ve been hearing good things about it.

I absolutely was not ready for the emotional gut punch that was this film.
