Criterion first contacted Rees about releasing Mudbound, which earned a total of four Oscar nominations, but Rees asked them to consider Pariah (Criterion will release Mudbound in the fall).

I had no idea about this announcement, but certainly elated to hear it as "Mudbound" has been high on my Criterion wishlist since "Roma" and "The Irishman" were announced. With all the Black filmmakers Criterion is bringing to the collection, and with all their Netflix work, I wonder if this means "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" will join the ranks, too.

Seems really stacked with the commentary, documentaries and interviews. Glad to have more Netflix titles with this and Pinocchio as there seemed to be a bit of a lull last year - maybe we’ll finally see American Factory and Atlantiques after four years of waiting after all.

Criterion have transferred Dee Rees's Mudbound to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "New 2K digital master, supervised by director Dee Rees and director of photography Rachel Morrison, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack". Netflix acquired distribution rights and the 1080P image quality is immaculate with kudos to Rachel Morrison's "subjective naturalism" cinematography that captures the elements (rain, wind, mud etc.) and fuses them into the 40's period. It looks flawless in the 2.39:1 widescreen on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. There may be some golden hues. A beautifully shot film exported impressively to physical media.

I have some interest in this but Criterion’s release of Nothing But a Man looks a bit more up my alley. Can’t wait to pick that one up.
