Default Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich

Quote:
From the producers of 1408 and the writer & producers of Bone Tomahawk comes a terrifying new vision of Charles Band’s classic franchise. This is Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich.

We told you last year that Full Moon’s Puppet Master franchise is getting a reboot courtesy of Di Bonaventura Pictures and Caliber Media, which was certainly a surprise as well as music to our ears. All the Puppet Master films over the years have been directly made by Full Moon, so the idea of other (more legit) companies optioning the rights and taking over is pretty exciting. Because let’s be honest. As much as we may all love Full Moon, we’d be lying if we said their output in recent years has been, well, let’s just say their best days may be behind them.

The intention is to expand the mythology by producing multiple storylines within a new universe, and Bone Tomahawk‘s S. Craig Zahler penned the script for inaugural universe flick Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. Via the Dallas Film Commission we’ve just learned that the film will begin shooting on March 27th, the shoot set to continue through most of April.

According to IMDb, Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund are directing.

The storyline for ‘The Littlest Reich’ follows a recently divorced young man who discovers a mint condition Blade doll in his deceased brother’s closet and plans to sell the toy at a convention in Oregon celebrating the 30th anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders. All hell breaks loose at the Postville Lodge during the auction when a strange force animates all of the various puppets throughout the convention as they go on a bloody killing spree.

Zahler’s completely new take on Puppet Master maintains all of the brutally inventive puppet kills infused with the comedic tendencies that made the original franchise so popular with fans, while expanding upon Toulon’s backstory and developing richer dialogue, characters, and narratives.

“Puppet Master was hands down my favorite, and I had the movie poster on my wall and a giant standee in my bedroom. The chance for us to work with Lorenzo, Zahler, and Band all at once on this new take is simply a dream come true.” Caliber Media’s Jack Heller recently said. “We couldn’t be more excited to take the series in a new direction while embracing all the practical effects and terrifying insanity that fans of The Puppet Master films love.”

Thoughts folks?

Thoughts: Why not? It's not like the last installments were great movies. And who knows ... Look how good the new IT looks. One can hope.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm more excited for this than the new FullMoon Puppet Master film, maybe because this one actually has a talent...and a good script...and competent actors (including cinema legend Udo Kier)...and above all, a budget.

Cinema legend Udo Kier, star of such classics as BloodRayne, Far Cry, Dracula 3000, and Feardotcom!

I don't have high expectation for this film but I wish them the best. The comic book series is rather entertaining.

No, no, I surely didn't get it wrong. "Why not?" Was me talking to my own mind. Héhé. Indeed, it could / should only get better.

He's made bad films. He's also in Suspiria, almost every Lars von Trier film, and cult classics Dracula and Frankenstein. Your point? :P

There was a time I only knew Udo Kier through Ace Ventura. In my defence, I was a young teenager. Hey, at least I know he smells terrific.

The less involvement from Charles Band, the better the movie. Bring it on.

I might check this out, because, it sounds like at least they are trying with this film. Puppets attacking a fan convention? Hokey, of course... But, could be fun.

I liked Puppet Master 1 and Puppet Master 2 back when they came out. But, my god, is this one horrible series the later you get into its run. It is like Children of the Corn, if not worse.

I am interested in this new movie. Hope it works. I'll watch it once if I like the trailer and like what goes on during its production.

Yeah - the first movie was a very cool idea that sort of worked but did leave a lot to be desired. Second one was borderline. Then, yep, it(series) went to pure crap.

I always wondered about a reboot of these movies. This is a case where it makes sense to do it. The originals are rather obscure and NOT held in very high regard. I hope it works out and the film is good!

I loved Bone Tomahawk so hopefully Zahler can pump some new life into the franchise.

I don't think even Children of the Corn got as bad as Puppet Master. The Corn franchise at least had decent production values and every once in a while it had an entertaining entry & appearances from actors in need of a paycheck (Naomi Watts, Nancy Allen, David Carradine, Fred Williamson, Karen Black, Terence Knox, Stacy Keach, Michael Ironside, etc). Puppet Master took such a dive after the Jeff Burr-directed entries, it was ASTOUNDING.

The reason for that is after PM 5, FullMoon's partnership with Paramount (who distributed the films, and helped with budgets) ended. Thanks in part to ol' Charlie doing some pretty sneaky stuff with the petty cash, like making 3 movies off the budget mean for 1 flick.

Sadly, Puppet Master is a franchise that needs a reasonable budget behind, and practical effects are incredibly costly (would anyone EVER accept CGI puppets?). Since FM went down under, the effects, acting talent (which at one time boasted some great character actors such as in PM 3) all followed said nosedive.

Shooting has been completed, they are now moving onto post-production. Apparently, a special reveal is slated for May 6th.
