For example if a game has a Ps4 Pro enhancement and I insert the disc and/or download the game off the PS store will it always download the Pro version, that is unless there is a Ps5 version available? Thanks - just getting a Ps5 soon thats basically the only thing I don't fully understand.

A PS4 game doesn't have a "Pro" version per se. If a game was patched or shipped with support for the Pro model, then those graphical options will usually be available when playing on a PS5. There's no separate versions of the game per se.

Also, when installing a PS4 disc game that is "PS4 Pro Enhanced" as stated on the back of the packaging case, on a PS5, it automatically offers the best version of the disc, which is the PS4 Pro version, automatically detected by the PS5, so there's no option to downgrade a PS4 disc that also offers PS4 Pro enhancements.
Example: Ghost Recon Wildlands PS4 on PS4 plays good but not as sharp as the PS4 Pro Enhanced 4K visuals when isntalled on PS5 (aka PS4 Pro 2 IMO ). |

As others have mentioned, the PS4 Pro enhancements are included in the game updates, and PS5 has a feature called Game Boost to improve the performance of games. Sony does not specifically mention PS4 Pro in the article below, but I checked H:ZD on PS5 and HDR is an option, this is an enhancement added for Pro consoles. It is reasonable to believe other games take advantage of the Pro enhancements, and games that didn’t receive Pro updates should still see benefits via Game Boost.

If you are unsure, “most” PS4 games are sold in the PS5 PS Store “built-in” App. Just head over there, search for the game in question & check game details.
“PS4 Enhanced” should be listed in the Store. However I don’t think it’s listed correctly for every single PS4 game. |

Keep in mind that, while Pro support might be available or built into a title, the PS5 does not have an option to force downsampling. Some early PS4 Pro titles locked display options behind whatever the PS4 Pro was outputting to. A later firmware allowed users to force downsampling for these games through a system menu, bypassing this restriction. This option does not exist in the PS5 OS. If the PS5 is hooked up to a 1080p set, the user is stuck with whatever options are available at that resolution.
It kind of sucks too. While the PS5 will brute force away any performance issues, us 1080p users are stuck with a 1080p native image and all of the potential aliasing that comes with it. OS recording options are also restricted to 1080p at 30fps, meaning game recording cannot be forced to 4k at 60fps when PS4 game footage is recorded on a PS5 while connected to a 1080p set (unless the developer left the option unlocked on the backend). |
