...is better than 90% of the usual Hollywood crap.
![]() Nice this is getting released, but I already got the UK Coen set that included this and Barton Fink. What I really want is The Man Who Wasn't There and The Ladykillers so I can complete my HD Coen collection. |

I agree that this is the absolute worst Coen brothers film... they were working with that one producer on this and on The Ladykillers and that's where there was a slight step down in quality before it picked back up again...
Having said that, I'll get it. I'll want it for my Coen collection. The Man Who Wasn't There is one of their best works. I hope that receives a release soon. |

I have this as part of the UK box set. I wouldn't want to ever buy it as a separate release. It's not a bad film at all though, it's just not up to the Coen Brothers standard. It's a damn sight more enjoyable than your average Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan rom-com.

The only way this is even close to the worst Coen Brothers movie is thanks to the quality of their catalog being so high (The Ladykillers is the one that works the least for me, but even that has Hanks' performance). I find it very, very funny. It is a lesser movie than Raising Arizona, but the style and type of wit are not that different, and I see no reason why one should be so highly regarded and the other so dismissed, other than the fact that they made Fargo and The Big Lebowski and many others in between.
I would be more excited if I could have any faith in it being a good transfer. Last edited by tylergfoster; 12-18-2013 at 07:22 PM. |

It's too bad they aren't releasing The Man Who Wasn't There as well.
I could see Disney licensing Ladykillers to Mill Creek. I'm not sure what the current ownership of Barton Fink is but it was a Fox title on DVD but Fox didn't include it in their US box set. I think Barton Fink could even be a Criterion contender. I could actually see TMWWT as a Criterion too and if they're both with Fox and Universal they could be licensed. Unfortunately Inside Llewyn Davis should be a Sony title so there are no other Coen films they can release as a tie-in. It's crazy to think that you can get Crimewave on Blu-ray but the Disney-controlled film with Tom Hanks from less than ten years ago is DVD-only. Last edited by GuruAskew; 12-18-2013 at 07:34 PM. |

I don't blame the collaboration itself for the failure of either Raimi/Coen film. The screenplay had nothing to do with the nightmare production of Crimewave and in hindsight making Hudsucker as a big-budget Joel Silver film was a mismatch to say the least.
Can you really come up with a scenario in which those two films would have turned out substantially different with slightly-different scripts? The problems on both were bigger than that. I think under different circumstances the Coen/Raimi collaboration could have been right up there with Lucas/Spielberg and Tarantino/Rodriguez but show business politics conspired against them. |

I'll see if its any different to the European edition and if not I'll probably stick with the DVD as its my least favourite Coen apart from A Serious Man and The Ladykillers. The Baron and Wheezy Joe are fun characters but the problem is Zeta-Jones, yes she's pretty but she's a mediocre actress and doesn't have the chemistry with Clooney that would make the film take off.
Still waiting for The Man Who Wasn't There and Barton Fink, I know they're available in Europe but I think the French edition has forced subs and Fink does look better than the DVD but is a typical lazy piece of Universal shovelware so I think Fox could do better. Fink was framed at 1.66 for the US DVD and 1.85 for the European DVD and Blu, don't know which is correct. |

I just emailed Criterion about Barton Fink and The Man Who Wasn't There. I doubt my email would get the ball rolling and I'm sure they're aware of the fact that the Coens are altogether unrepresented in the collection but I figured the worst they could do was ignore my email.
In my email I even pointed out that I don't see them releasing The Ladykillers but of all the Coen films BF and TMWWT would probably fit in the Criterion Collection best even aside from the fact that they're unavailable on Blu-ray in the US. If we had two Coen Criterions and a bargain-bin Ladykillers disc from Mill Creek this time next year I'd be ecstatic. For a long time the Coen filmography seemed extremely spotty on Blu but now it seems reasonably close. |
