USA Intolerable Cruelty (2003) - March 4, 2014

http://www.amazon.com/Intolerable-Cr...370606&sr=1-52

Quote:
It's comic gold as two of Hollywood's most dazzling stars - George Clooney and Academy Award-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones - light up the screen in Intolerable Cruelty, a hilarious romantic comedy about men, women, and everything that can go wrong between them. Sparks fly when brilliant divorce attorney Miles Massey (Clooney) meets his match in the beautiful but ruthless Marylin Rexroth (Zeta-Jones). From Academy Award-winning directors Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (Fargo; O Brother Where Art Thou), Intolerable Cruelty) also stars multi-talented Billy Bob Thornton and outrageous Cedric the Entertainer.

The worst Coen Brothers movie....but Catherine Zeta Jones was probably at her most beautiful here..or close to it.

Agreed. Mercifully it was included in the U.K. boxset with A Serious Man and Barton Fink among others. I can say I have it for completest reasons. That leaves The Ladykillers.

One of my least favorite Coen Bros. films, but it's a pretty fun movie, so I may pick it up.

Nice this is getting released, but I already got the UK Coen set that included this and Barton Fink. What I really want is The Man Who Wasn't There and The Ladykillers so I can complete my HD Coen collection.

I agree that this is the absolute worst Coen brothers film... they were working with that one producer on this and on The Ladykillers and that's where there was a slight step down in quality before it picked back up again...

Having said that, I'll get it. I'll want it for my Coen collection.

The Man Who Wasn't There is one of their best works. I hope that receives a release soon.

I have this as part of the UK box set. I wouldn't want to ever buy it as a separate release. It's not a bad film at all though, it's just not up to the Coen Brothers standard. It's a damn sight more enjoyable than your average Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan rom-com.

The only way this is even close to the worst Coen Brothers movie is thanks to the quality of their catalog being so high (The Ladykillers is the one that works the least for me, but even that has Hanks' performance). I find it very, very funny. It is a lesser movie than Raising Arizona, but the style and type of wit are not that different, and I see no reason why one should be so highly regarded and the other so dismissed, other than the fact that they made Fargo and The Big Lebowski and many others in between.

I would be more excited if I could have any faith in it being a good transfer.

It's too bad they aren't releasing The Man Who Wasn't There as well.

I could see Disney licensing Ladykillers to Mill Creek. I'm not sure what the current ownership of Barton Fink is but it was a Fox title on DVD but Fox didn't include it in their US box set. I think Barton Fink could even be a Criterion contender. I could actually see TMWWT as a Criterion too and if they're both with Fox and Universal they could be licensed.

Unfortunately Inside Llewyn Davis should be a Sony title so there are no other Coen films they can release as a tie-in.

It's crazy to think that you can get Crimewave on Blu-ray but the Disney-controlled film with Tom Hanks from less than ten years ago is DVD-only.

At least the Blu-ray transfer was good.
Seeing as I only have not seen Miller's Crossing and Paris, je taime, I feel that I must state my opinion.
Here's how I'd rank them:
  1. Raising Arizona
  2. Inside Llewyn Davis
  3. Fargo
  4. The Big Lebowski
  5. Barton Fink
  6. The Man Who Wasn't There
  7. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
  8. Intolerable Cruelty
  9. True Grit
  10. No Country for Old Men
  11. Burn After Reading
  12. The Ladykillers
  13. Blood Simple
  14. A Serious Man
  15. The Hudsucker Proxy

To each his own. I love Sam Raimi and I love the Coens, but it does not work for me when they work together.

I don't blame the collaboration itself for the failure of either Raimi/Coen film. The screenplay had nothing to do with the nightmare production of Crimewave and in hindsight making Hudsucker as a big-budget Joel Silver film was a mismatch to say the least.

Can you really come up with a scenario in which those two films would have turned out substantially different with slightly-different scripts? The problems on both were bigger than that.

I think under different circumstances the Coen/Raimi collaboration could have been right up there with Lucas/Spielberg and Tarantino/Rodriguez but show business politics conspired against them.

I'll see if its any different to the European edition and if not I'll probably stick with the DVD as its my least favourite Coen apart from A Serious Man and The Ladykillers. The Baron and Wheezy Joe are fun characters but the problem is Zeta-Jones, yes she's pretty but she's a mediocre actress and doesn't have the chemistry with Clooney that would make the film take off.

Still waiting for The Man Who Wasn't There and Barton Fink, I know they're available in Europe but I think the French edition has forced subs and Fink does look better than the DVD but is a typical lazy piece of Universal shovelware so I think Fox could do better. Fink was framed at 1.66 for the US DVD and 1.85 for the European DVD and Blu, don't know which is correct.

I just emailed Criterion about Barton Fink and The Man Who Wasn't There. I doubt my email would get the ball rolling and I'm sure they're aware of the fact that the Coens are altogether unrepresented in the collection but I figured the worst they could do was ignore my email.

In my email I even pointed out that I don't see them releasing The Ladykillers but of all the Coen films BF and TMWWT would probably fit in the Criterion Collection best even aside from the fact that they're unavailable on Blu-ray in the US.

If we had two Coen Criterions and a bargain-bin Ladykillers disc from Mill Creek this time next year I'd be ecstatic. For a long time the Coen filmography seemed extremely spotty on Blu but now it seems reasonably close.

I'd so be up for a Criterion Barton Fink.

Just caught The Ladykillers on Encore an hour or so ago and I still enjoy it.

Wow, this is getting a lot of hate. It's definitely not the Coen's worst, nor their best either, but definitely a mid-level Coen Brothers film. I thought this movie was hilarious!

One of the very few Coen Brothers films I've never seen. Even if it's not that great, I'm sure it's worth checking out at least once.
