USA Night of the Juggler 4K UHD (1980) Kino Studio Classics

Kino have announced plans to release the film Night of the Juggler (1980), which stars James Brolin, on 4K UHD on September 16th!

Warning/Note: Unfortunately, it's now been confirmed that Kino's disc has an error, where a scene around the 30 minute mark is repeated a second time, and actually plays over an existing scene. This was first noticed by another member during a theatrical viewing (see quote below). As of now, there are no plans for a replacement disc. Radiance has stated their upcoming 4K release will not have this error.

However, I think I did spot a mistake in the restoration. In the scene where the kidnapper arrives back in the South Bronx with the girl, there is a shot that is repeated. It’s a shot of the van being stripped, where the gang members are lifting some sort of big case from the back, and they open it and get excited. It’s noticeable because the first time the shot has audio of the gang members reaction, and then when it’s shown again it’s silent. I checked a copy on YouTube and didn’t see this repeated shot.

To me, it looked like a mistake in the conform, where the same shot was accidentally inserted twice. Did anyone else see the new restoration and notice this? I can’t be 100% sure of what I saw without going to see the movie again.

The grit and intensity of late-1970s New York City is depicted in stark detail in this relentlessly action-packed cult classic. Twenty-four hours of nerve-jangling tension and suspense begin when a twisted psychotic (Cliff Gorman, Cops and Robbers, All That Jazz) kidnaps a teenaged girl, mistaking her for the daughter of a wealthy real estate developer. Her determined father (James Brolin, The Car, The Amityville Horror), a hard-hitting ex-cop, doggedly pursues them through New York’s seamy streets, decaying, burned-out Bronx tenements, and the grimy subterranean corridors beneath the city itself. Based on the novel by William P. McGivern (The Big Heat, Odds Against Tomorrow) and co-starring Richard S. Castellano (The Godfather), Julie Carmen (In the Mouth of Madness), Dan Hedaya (Blood Simple) and Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride), Night of the Juggler is a thrilling example of no-holds-barred, pure adrenaline-fueled filmmaking. The film’s original director Sidney J. Furie (The Ipcress File, The Appaloosa) was replaced by Robert Butler (Up the Creek, Turbulence) a few weeks into production.

Yeah, I've never heard of it, but it sounds great. I don't think there was ever an official DVD for it (in the US at least), so this appears to be making the jump from VHS to 4K.

I understand why Kino gets a lot of hate, but stuff like this sure makes me glad they exist.

Always cool to see a never on disc title to get this type of jump to either Blu-ray or 4K. Thanks Kino!

They each have titles the other envies in terms of "holy grail" titles stuck in rights hell or music clearance hell.

To mention a few: VS got titles like The Keep and Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Shout got titles like The Killer and Hard-Boiled. Kino got titles like this and The Glass Web.

They just announced today that they plan to release it. Actual release could be anywhere from 6-18 months from now, depending on a number of factors.

Oh this is great news. One of the best NYC films of the early 1980s. Perfect, non PC, and over the top. Hopefully “Fort Apache, The Bronx” is next!

That one resides with Warner (who controls the catalog of producer Time Life Films) which is both good and bad as Fox only had theatrical rights and could have been worse under the Mouse. I can see that being a WA release unless Warner gets very desperate from colossal bombs and licenses it out to someone like Arrow.

As long as they're going through Jay Weston's archive, I hope they take a look and see if they can dig up "Buddy Buddy".
