Default Great Article about ps3/blu-ray

HD DVD: Time to quit?

Quote:
Opinion - The HD DVD camp suffered two major blows today and no matter you look at it, begins to look like the certain loser of the high-def format war. HD DVD better has a secret weapon that it can aim at Blu-ray now. Otherwise Toshiba can only hope for a miracle or actually admit defeat. But it is not only Toshiba that loses: A victory of Blu-ray may actually be much more painful for Microsoft.

If you own a HD DVD player and hoped that the format will win in the end, I can feel your pain. I am among those people who purchased such a player, although for different reasons than your typical HD customer: My player was actually cheaper than an upscaling DVD player, I got seven free HD DVD movies and I knew that even if the format doesn’t win in the end, I still can use it as a DVD player. I am still happy with that decision, but if I have to say that the 35-second startup time of the player and the loud fan noise (there’s a Pentium 4 processor inside) is annoying.

Sorry i know it was long. I thought it was great on how people are starting to appreciate the PS3 and showing how Microsoft will be the biggest loser.

finally people are seeing the PS3 as a movie player and maybe start counting those totals in... I for one bought the PS3 as a blu-ray player, granted it is like getting 2 for one as it plays all PS games as well and has always been the best player and best price blu-ray machine, region free and easily updatable. They hit the nail on the head by saying Sony did the right thing with the PS3. Finally its getting its credit.

I happen to think that the most telling part of the article (very interesting as a whole) is this

Quote:
It is interesting to note that we are under embargo on some of these announcements, as they are planned to be made at the end of Q1 or in Q2. Given the situation, we can say that a handful of smaller movie studios told us that they would be supporting Blu-ray exclusively, but decided to hold back such an announcement as they were sitting on a pile of HD DVDs they still wanted to get rid of. Plus, remember there’s quite some marketing money floating around which no one wants to lose. As reported earlier, industry sources told us that Chicago retailer Grant’s Appliances had no intentions of supporting HD DVD anymore and another source told us that Blockbuster is also focusing on Blu-ray (some stores are still stocking HD DVDs at this time).
I think April will be very interesting

Weinstein?
...
...

possibly ... Dreamworks ?? (hint: Marketing money)

I think this article is grossly overestimating the value of HD-DVD to MS, at least vis a vis the 360. If anyone knows how much MS has spent on HDi, I'm interested in learning. Toshiba, I believe, manufactured all of the 360 drives. Would love to know the actual extent of MS involvement and not just conjecture.

If rlod didn't kill the 360, then why would hd-dvd's failure? And by disaster, what specifically are you (article writer who isn't reading this) meaning? I am hard pressed to imagine a scenario where the 360 is eclipsed by the ps3 worldwide by 2010 and the US before 2011, at which point the 360 will have actually made a profit (as opposed to its predecessor) and its successor will be nearing. I don't see the ps3 ever eclipsing the total software sales of the 360, however.

And what precludes MS from coming out with an external blu-ray drive? Do you actually think that MS doesn't have anything in the works for the (now) likelihood of hd-dvd's failure?

I don't really see the failure of HD DVD hurting the 360 too badly. At least not at first.

What could very well hurt it though, is that with the adoption of Blu Ray and the name recognition increasing, the PS3 sales will boost, encouraging developpers to go back to it and bring exclusives to the console.

2008 might just be the tipping year, with great games coming to the PS3, but also Blu Ray winning the HD war.

Beyond this, the lack of a HD storage could also potentially hurt the 360.
Games like LA noire that will start taking advantage of the very high data capacity of Blu Ray might get more and more present, leaving the 360 in the dust.

But it's all conjectures at this point

Default Damn it feels good...!

This was a very good article... and it wasn't good because i'm a PS3/Blu-ray fanboy, but... because it told the truth...

I've been a big supporter from day 1. And i'm glad that people are starting to listen and understand the big picture.

PS3 + BLU-RAY = The future of home entertainment

And seriously.. no one is perfect... but i sure am glad that my side won. And i'm glad that i can tell people " I TOLD YOU SO "

I've preached and preached about the great advantages of the PS3/Blu-ray and... i'm glad that my friends listened... some sold their 360's... most bought PS3's and now enjoys everything that the PS3 has to offer...

PS3/Blu-ray... it feels good to be sooooooooooooo riiiiight
