Default GOR (1987) Outlaw of GOR (1988)

I bought this on German Blu-Ray, I wish Kino or Vinegar Syndrome would do a Domestic release:

GOR:
American professor Tarl Cabot is transported via a magical ring to planet Gor, where he must help an oppressed country overthrow its evil king and his barbarian henchmen. Starring Urbano Barberini, Jack Palance, Oliver Reed and Playboy Playmate Rebecca Ferratti!

Outlaw of GOR:
An Earthman returns to the planet Gor, and fights against tyranny. Urbano Barberini, Jack Palance and Rebecca Ferratti return for this Fantasy Sequel!

Trailer in English:

They look interesting. Uh... have you read the books they're based on? I'm not sure how faithful the movies are to the books, but the books would be viewed as "problematic" (to say the least) to modern audiences. To me, that's a recommendation.

The German BD has atrocious PQ, I only got because it was dirt cheap at one point, plus the second is a SD transfer.

The art is great but probably misleading, GOR is PG and GOR II is PG-13. I hope to watch these this weekend to find out.

I bought the German Mediabook when it first came out, since I've always loved these two... but yeah, the quality isn't the greatest.

It's definitely better than the old VHS tapes, but more like upconverted DVD's than actual HD. Hopefully they'll get some quality releases somewhere, some day.

I haven’t seen these films but the books were good. To be fair they were pretty much inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs tales of Mars

Apparently they got the rights to use this 1976 painting by pulp fantasy artist Boris Vallejo, rather than using the cheesier looking original poster art.

I don't blame them, that poster art is lame and the Boris Vallejo painting is amazing.

This poster art is good:

Looks like that one was a painting by fantasy artist Ken Kelly which was used as the cover for a 1984 book in the GOR series.

Conan is popular. Broad appeal. It's not surprising there are many published works.

38 is impressive bordering on miraculous for the presumably narrow appeal of the Gor novels. Especially in today's political climate. Unless the recent books take the story in a woke direction, it's encouraging Gor finds a large enough market to make new books economically viable. They're practically subversive in today's world.

1 is really pretty good, 3 introduces some really interesting concepts behind the scenes of the world that (at least as far as I got) never got touched on again
[Show spoiler]The whole thing is run by giant telepathic insects
and IIRC 5 was terrific... I enjoyed the rest that I read but obviously they got samey!
