A few years ago, there was talk of an Election sequel that would go straight to Paramount+… the project died but Alexander Payne hasn’t given up on the long-hoped for sequel to his 1999 film

An interview with MovieWeb says that “the major players, Witherspoon and Payne included, are interested in revisiting the project”



According to Payne, “The only trouble was that I just can't go back to high school. I just can't do it. So Jim and I have reconceived it differently, and we're working on it actively.”

I'll watch anything these Payne makes. Also that article is a good read of his views on classic films and his work with TCM.

Interviewed at Locarno, where he's the recipient of an honorary award, Payne says he'll make this right after his Danish movie.

I’m moving to Denmark in the Fall. I’m going to make a proper European art film. I got European citizenship about four years ago. I’m Greek. I don’t care that much about Greek citizenship, per se, but I got it with a very practical goal in mind, which was to make films in Europe and qualify for state funding, and the Film Gods brought me this project in Danish [“Somewhere Out There”]. Renate Reinsve is going to be in it. When I finish that, then I’m going to start work on a sequel to my film “Election,” that I made 25 years ago [...]

Anyone expecting it to follow the novel will be disappointed:

It won’t be [close to the novel]. Tom Perrotta, the novelist, wrote a really fine novel (“Tracy Flick Can’t Win”) that whetted everyone’s appetite for it, but it takes place again in a high school and I just can’t make another high school movie. I’m done with that. So Jim Taylor and I have altered the concept of it.
