There is no doubt that 1080p is theoretically better than 1080i. However, 1080i on a good TV is still HD quality and looks very good. I am sure you watch TV programs besides Blu Ray on your TV. CBS & NBC broadcast HD programs in 1080i, ABC and Fox do it in 720p.
The difference between 1080i and 1080p becomes more noticeable as your screen size gets bigger. Get yourself a PS3 for Blu Ray and set the resolution to 1080i and enjoy your movies. In the future, when you decide to upgrade your TV, buy a 1080p TV. Read the following article. http://www.cnet.com/4520-7874_1-5137915-1.html Last edited by Big Daddy; 02-13-2008 at 07:43 AM. |

ALiS (alternate lighting of surfaces) is a technology developed by Fujitsu/Hitachi for plasma displays. On a conventional plasma TV, all pixels are illuminated at all times. With an ALiS plasma panel, alternate rows of pixels are illuminated so that half the panel’s pixels are illuminated at any moment, similar to interlaced CRT-type TV. The ALiS technique uses interlaced rather than progressive scans. ALiS panels increase brightness, very clear picture, reduced power consumption, and extended panel life. For 1080i HDTV content, the signal is passed directly to the display where the image is reproduced line-for-line without vertical scaling so there is less influence on picture quality through conversion.. ALiS Panel resolution of your TV (check the manual): 1280 x 1080i Full-HD 1080p resolution: 1920 x 1080p My best guess is that your TV cannot display 1080p. However, it will probably do a better job on 1080i signals than most other plasma TVs. You can input 1080p signal through HDMI cable to some models of Hitachi TVs even though the TV is not 1080p. Check your manual. Unless your TV accepts 1080p input signal, make sure you set the resolution of your Blu Ray player to 1080i.
