Default Brimstone & Treacle 4K (Vinegar Syndrome)

https://vinegarsyndrome.com/collecti...mstone-treacle

Quote:
This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Sam Smith) is limited to 5,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Young con man Martin Taylor is out grifting on the streets of London when he happens across Tom Bates, a middle-class family man who, Martin quickly learns, has a disabled daughter at home who’s been left brain-damaged by a hit-and-run accident. Pretending to be an old love interest of the girl, Pattie, Martin soon tricks his way into the family’s countryside home, where he promptly charms mother Norma and convinces her to let him stay for a few days to be close to and care for Pattie - much to the wariness of Tom, who questions Martin’s intentions. As the young man ingratiates himself more and more into their family life, it soon becomes clear that he harbors a much more sinister purpose.

Originally written for British television by legendary dramatist Dennis Potter, the resulting 1976 BBC TV play was deemed so controversial that it was pulled prior to airing and not broadcast until 1987. The 1982 film version of BRIMSTONE & TREACLE, adapted for the big screen by Potter and with director Richard Loncraine (The Haunting of Julia, Richard III) at the helm, is a haunting and deeply disturbing slice of modern British gothic with an electrifying central performance by Sting in the role of Martin Taylor, alongside celebrated actors Denholm Elliott and Joan Plowright. Accompanied by a pulsing score from The Police, BRIMSTONE & TREACLE, at last, arrives on UHD with a brand new 4K restoration from the original negative supervised by Richard Loncraine and cinematographer Peter Hannan, together with a host of revelatory new bonus features.

directed by: Richard Loncraine
starring: Sting, Denholm Elliott, Joan Plowright, Suzanna Hamilton, Benjamin Whitrow, Dudley Sutton, Mary MacLeod
1982 / 87 min / 1.85:1 / English Stereo
Additional info:

  • 4K UHD presented in Dolby Vision High-Dynamic-Range
  • Newly scanned & restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative
  • Reversible sleeve artwork
  • English SDH subtitles
Special Features:
  • Newly recorded select-scene audio commentary with lead actor Sting and director Richard Loncraine (41 min)
  • "Trouble Brewing" (26 min) - an interview with director Richard Loncraine
  • "A House for the Devil" (16 min) - an interview with production designer Milly Burns

Nice, the soundtrack licensing must have cost a chunk of change.

I prefer the tv series, but it’s still a pretty effective effort. For those that haven’t seen it, it’s a slow burner but disturbing and never less than interesting.

Never imagined we would get a 4K of this.

I love this film (just watched the cruddy MGM DVD a few weeks ago). I never ordered from VS before and I don’t feel too bothered about getting the slipcover, is it safe to wait for Orbit to put this up for a preorder?

Sure, or you could just order the standard (non-slipcover) version from Vinegar Syndrome directly now. It's a few bucks cheaper and they have over 900 in stock.

Not sure how much orbit pre-order is, but VS preorder is $10 cheaper than amazon's, so worth it from a financial standpoint. And if you ever want to sell it, the slipcover versions usually go for a lot more.

I just finished watching myself - for the first time since it's cinema release.

Enjoyed it even more this time around. Great release all round.

Really sucks it doesn't include the original TV movie as an extra. Pretty sure the only reason this is the first Dennis Potter to hit bluray (much less 4K) is because Vinegar Syndrome is banking on Sting having some star power, but we really need more.

"Pennies from Heaven" was the last thing he did in the awful "16mm outside, video inside" BBC style. Everything after, including "The Singing Detective," "Blue Remembered Hills," and "Lipstick on Your Collar" was either 16mm or 35mm, so it'd be worth the upgrade.

As a young child, I had the weirdest case of mistaken identity for Sting. I for a short bit there literally thought that this SINGER was also somehow the PRO WRESTLER w/ face point. White guy, blonde hair, and the same name? Same guy, duh.

I always chuckle to myself about it.

Ha ha. Sting is pretty versatile. You don't know that he's NOT a wrestler.
